A Crimean Tatar radio station has opened in Ukraine - the first time a dedicated station there has broadcast news in the Tatar language. Tens of thousands of Tatars were exiled to Central Asia by Soviet authorities and they were only allowed home to the Crimea in the last years of the USSR.
Many Crimean Tatars in Ukraine say they are still treated like second class citizens in the Black Sea peninsula.
But the launch of Radio Meydan is a sign of growing acceptance.
On air 12 hours a day, seven days a week, Radio Meydan has traditional music as well as speech programmes.
Key topics
More than 250,000 Crimean Tatars have returned home after the mass deportation 60 years ago.
But life has been hard. There are problems with discrimination, housing and poverty. These are some of the issues which the radio station is aiming to cover.
During last year's presidential election in Ukraine, Crimean Tatar leaders supported the opposition.
Under the new administration of Viktor Yushchenko, they are now hoping they will be rewarded with a greater political role in the region.
They also hope that this radio station will be the first of many projects which advance the culture of Crimean Tatars in Ukraine.
National Leader Viktor Yushchenko = Mr. Tatar Head
bump
The thing is that the Tartars are not only separate religiously -- they are also ethnically distinct -- being descended from one of the Mongol tribes. I support them being allowed to use their own language.
Problem is, many of these tartars (actual tartars never left Mongolia, they were exterminated by Chengis for the murder of his father, these guys are a Turkic people) are Jihadi veterans of Chechnya, Afghanistan, Uzebekistan and Bosnia. There are many cells presently in training in the hills and even though they are the minority, they are pushing for a united Caliphant. Becareful whom you support, nothing is straight forward in Europe.
Well if that's the case, then the EU is a lost cause. As soon as the federation happens, your borders will be open to full Islamic immigration. That along with abortions, euthanasia and Warsaw gay parades.
Russia has more Muslims than a whole EU.
Sorry, but you're wrong again, as usual.
Muslims are 10% of the Russian population, which means there are 14 million or so and they breed at the same rate as most Russians.
Muslims in the EU:
Estimates of the Muslim population in the recently expanded EU vary considerably owing to the lack of accurate statistics. Out of a population of 450 million, Muslims are estimated at between 15 and 25 million. In countries like France , Germany and Britain , the Muslim population reaches into the millions.
And the Muslims you've got are Arabs who have 5-10 Children as opposed to most of Europe at 1.2 (Russia's is upto 1.56 and rising, Europe's is still falling).
Once Turkey joins the EU you'll be flooded by Muslims, even more so then after Albania and Bosnia join, 12.5 million more.
The number of Muslims in Belgium is estimated at around 400,000, which is about 4 percent of the total population of the country. Similarly to the other countries of the EU the Muslim population in Belgium is very young. Almost 35 percent of the Turks and Moroccans, who constitute the largest Muslim groups in the country are below 18 years old, compared with 18 percent of the native Belgians. One of the consequences of this situation is that one-quarter of Brusselians under 20 years old are of 'Muslim origin'. Moreover in 2002 in the region of Brussels the most popular names given to babies were Mohammed and Sarah (Bousetta 2003:8).
