Rabbi Yehuda Levin has issued the following statement on behalf of the Union of Orthodox Rabbis of the United States and Canada:
"We urge President George Bush and Florida Governor Jeb Bush to take immediate, decisive action to save the life of Terri Schindler-Schiavo. We appreciate the pro-life statements of President Bush and Governor Bush. Yet, their efforts have thus far not been successful. We therefore urge the President and Governor Bush to take immediate and decisive action - either jointly or separately - to save the life of Terri Schindler-Schiavo before it is too late.
"When evil becomes 'legally' sanctioned by government, it rises to a higher order of evil - that of Sodom. Legality does not dictate morality. The Almighty dictates morality.
"America is being tested. Will we pass or will we fail?
"Perhaps some feel that everything that could be done has been done. But our holy Torah, the Word of G-d, says otherwise: 'Am I my brother's keeper?' We all know the answer."
Are we German enough yet?
This is, I fear, the very slippery slope we all have feared. When a ten year old gets arrested for trying to bring another asuffering person a glass of water, and when the STATE judicial authorities are murdering people in their beds with their court orders, then we are all doomed.
An open announcement to the AARP crowd: better get out of Florida, fast. They will be coming for you next.
It was wrong to seize Elian because he was seized in order to send him into slavery. It would be right to seize Terri because she is being murdered.
The Bushes did not swear to uphold "the law" (defined as whatever a pipsqueak state circuit judge says) but to uphold the Constitutions of the U.S. and Florida, which both contain provisions prohibiting what is being done to Terri.
What does ignoring the Supreme Court have to do with ignoring the Constitution? Those things are not synonymous.
Both Bushes are violating their oath of office, because both of them are failing to protect an innocent American from a public, court-ordered murder.
Terri is not dying--or was not dying until the starvation began.
Terri has never been hooked up to any "infernal machines." She was connected to her feeding tube ONLY AT MEALTIMES. And if Michael had not denied her ANY therapy, she would be eating by mouth now.
If you are not horrified by the prospect of living in a country ruled by judges, in which the Congress and President and Governors will do nothing to save you from being murdered, then you are hard to horrify.
Guess what: You already live in that country.
The Constitutional right to trial by jury of peers speaks to the fact that the founding fathers did not trust judges, and citizens may protect their group from kangaroo courts (jury nullification), even when deadly force is used.
The law, police, and judges deserve only the respect they earn, and this coin comes with righteousness not legality, as the Nazi learned at Nuremberg.
God BLess the good Rabbi.
Ops4 God Bless America!
The law of man is flawed and has often been used as cover to commit massive atrocities against the weak and helpless.
When there is a conflict between man's law and the higher moral law, the higher moral law MUST prevail or the society is ultimately doomed to fail.
George and Jeb Bush know what is being done to Terri Schiavo is wrong. They have admitted it and yet they now fail to act to correct that injustice.
Would I expect them to reject the law of man to follow God's law? Yes, I would, since they know with certainty who retains the ultimate authority over mankind.
Neither of the brothers will be hailed or blessed as heroes for allowing Terri Schiavo to be starved to death.
They have decided not to act and will be cursed for it.
I believe our country will be cursed for it, too.
"Umm, yeah. The basic act is still the same--saving someone's life--whether it be from starvation or living under a horrid regime. A life is destroyed either way. We cannot stoop to Janet Reno, jack-boot thug level. the "Nazis" are the ones killing Terri. Neither the President, nor Governor Bush, should break the law."
"Law is about what we can do, whereas justice is about what we should do. Law chooses between the parties in contention without regards to morality; justice chooses between right and wrong.".......If the state can decree food and water, no matter how administered, are "extraordinary means," we will all exist at the whim of tyranny, with or without the veneer of legality."
William Goldcamp
from the artical, "In Search of Justice".
The Washington Times, 27 March 2005
Say hello to tyranny, and make sure you understand that sometimes "jack-booted thugs" wear suits and robes.
[sound of crickets]
"the level of Sodom"
I know a few theologians who claim that the U S A is worse even at this time. They agree on a big chastisement in the very near future.
The President on an church exit intierview did say he prayed for the military and alos for the media.
It would have been a good time to get across his prayer for Terri but he did not.
Maybe they believed that our system wasn't as broken as it is? Maybe they had faith that our leaders would do what they were elected to do? Maybe they had some belief that the madness would stop after Terri's story was told to the public by the fair and balanced media?
I don't know!
But I do know one thing..... The political scene and the religious scene in this country is going to change drastically if this court ordered execution actually reaches finality......
PING
I agree with you here. However, in this case there are too many questions as to how Terri Shiavo became incapacitated in the first place. There are plenty of reasons to question whether or not this could be "the perfect crime". IF Michael Shiavo had anything to do with her demise, shouldn't it at least be investigated? What's to stop the next guy from "finding" his wife nearly brain dead after a so called "accident"...and then saying, "She told me she'd never want to live this way."? Then, to top it all off, the courts agree with him and finish her off legally. And to add insult to injury, they do it by slowly dehydrating her. (Would you dehydrate your dog under any circumstances? )
It has been reported that Michael Shiavo has refused millions to release her to her parents...supposedly because he want to "honor her wishes". Why is honoring that "verbal contract" (her alleged wish to be allowed to die) any more important than honoring his marriage contract? If he's willing to let go of their marriage contract...then fine....but why not that other "contract" too? IMO, the case stinks to high Heaven. I pray no stone is left unturned. It's truly a crying shame. May God love and bless Terri Shiavo and her family.
I've already faxed and emailed this to Jeb Bush. There is collusion. There is lying. There is an agenda intended solely to kill Terri Schiavo.
But it won't stop there. Other elderly will be next.
Whatever you do, if you live in Florida, read Statute 765 very carefully. It MUST be revised again -- because even if you have written your Living Will, if it doesn't say to "pull the plug," all it takes is a couple of people with hearsay evidence to turn your Living Will into a Death Sentence.
This is a sad day in American history.
The slogan 'never forget' rings hollow. We blame the Germans for not stopping the murders yet somehow our politicians are blameless?
You are trying to debate an issue where you are too emotionally involved! I don't like the judicial rulings, but the judicial system makes up 1/3 of our government. The Supreme Court must be obeyed by the President. Eisenhower fumed over Brown vs, Board of Education, but he sent in troops never-the -less to support the ruling. And because of it, whether Eisenhower liked it or not, desegregation began. Our Constitution's checks & balances do not always please everyone, all of the time.
