Rabbi Yehuda Levin has issued the following statement on behalf of the Union of Orthodox Rabbis of the United States and Canada:
"We urge President George Bush and Florida Governor Jeb Bush to take immediate, decisive action to save the life of Terri Schindler-Schiavo. We appreciate the pro-life statements of President Bush and Governor Bush. Yet, their efforts have thus far not been successful. We therefore urge the President and Governor Bush to take immediate and decisive action - either jointly or separately - to save the life of Terri Schindler-Schiavo before it is too late.
"When evil becomes 'legally' sanctioned by government, it rises to a higher order of evil - that of Sodom. Legality does not dictate morality. The Almighty dictates morality.
"America is being tested. Will we pass or will we fail?
"Perhaps some feel that everything that could be done has been done. But our holy Torah, the Word of G-d, says otherwise: 'Am I my brother's keeper?' We all know the answer."
Unfortunately the left believes in neither God nor morality.
"the level of Sodom"
scary thought, and not new to my mind.
There is nothing more the Bush brothers can do. Lord knows they tried, and God bless them for it. Terri will die, but truth will out. Things will emerge about the lunkhead (Michael) and people will come to see that he had only his own freedom in mind. His lawyer turns out to be a wacko too btw.
What and do what Janet Reno did and seize her like Elian?
Get real.....that was wrong then .....and it would be wrong now.
Oh no! Those nasty Christian Right Taliban types are trying to...er...um...never mind.
Your exoneration of the powers-that-be in this horror do not satisfy my outrage.
Thanks for posting this. "Legality does not dictate morality. The Almighty dictates morality"....Absolutely correct. I pray that the country takes note and learns the appropriate lesson.
The left is highly experienced in creating "gods" even more vengeful and death-dealing than Yahweh of the Scriptures. (Hitler, Stalin, Pol Pot, Mao, etc).
You are far too kind.
Amen.
Absolutey sums up exactly what I believe.
I also think that alot of people may ultimately be surprised how many of us average dumb Americans who aren't legal scholars and don't worship the Constitution are so totally disgusted with what has happened in this case (the willful killing of an innocent American, not the Congresse's weak attempt to save her) that we have no further faith in our system. I have talked to die hard libertarians and liberals who also are dumbfounded at what has happened.
I don't know how this will play out, but I cannot imagine it will be good for the current arbiters of our legal system.
susie
If there is no need to believe what's written in the Bible, then what does it matter what they swore to do with their hands on it?
Bush swore to uphold the Constitution. Andrew Jackson ignored the Supreme Court once, and it remains a great stain on our Republic. Bush is not a dictator. He doesn't like the laws and rulings any more than I do, but he and his brother must act within the law. That's the way it is. Period.
The husband may sell a bunch of books in the baby-killer blue states but I have he does sell many to honest people. Michael must be making some big, big bucks from the death of Terri, insurance, movie rights, and the like, that he and his bimbo would lose if he and Terri divorced.
Plunge the country into a constitutional crisis over something that is played out thousands of times a year? Of course without the mass hysteria and circus atmosphere of Terri's case.
What happens when Federal Marshall's or state troopers or national guardsman's face off with the sheriffs guarding the hospice?
Should they open fire on them when they refuse to put down their weapons? And they will refuse to put down their weapons unless the judge is there to rescind his order.
How many people must be shot down to satisfy Terri supporters??
How much chaos will be enough?
Would a total democratic victory in the next presidential and congressional elections make you feel better??
I have news for the pro-life movement.
Most Americans are running away from you now in absolute horror!
The horror is the thought of some politician and some radical pro-life group descending on their deathbeds, shoving their families out of the way and demanding that we be given the "gift" of so-called life as our broken bodies waste away and our minds recede into madness or nothingness while the feeding tubes and other infernal machines keep our wrecked bodies alive for the next 15 years or more!
That is a fate much worse than death to many people.
" 1) Who is it that you are referring to who doesn't believe what's written in the Bible? "
You, since you wrote that what's in the Torah is irrelevant, and sicne the Torah is part of the Bible, that is the same as saying the Bible is irrelevant.
"2) It makes every difference for our elected officials to honor what they swear to. Anyone who doesn't understand that is ignorant."
No one suggested otherwise. I just found it extremely ironic that in the same sentence you disvowed the contents of the Bible you make a special reference to the significance of oaths that are sworn on it.
Are you really going to compare kidnapping a little boy at gunpoint, and giving him to a dictator, to saving an innocent woman's life?
