U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials tell TIMEs Brian Bennett that they will announce a significant increase in resources this week to address the influx of illegal immigrants still crossing by land in Arizona.
More than 500,000 illegal aliens were caught last year in southern Arizona alone, accounting for 52% of all undocumented migrants detained in the U.S. in 2004, TIME reports.
Chris Simcox, a small-town newspaper owner in Sierra Vista, Ariz. less than 10 miles from the Mexican border, is fed up with what he sees as government inaction in the face of lawlessness and a threat to national security. As head of a two-year-old group called the Civil Homeland Defense Corps, he is spearheading a new Minuteman Project that will place volunteers at quarter-mile intervals to watch a busy 50-mile stretch of border for the entire month of April. The goal, he says, is not to confront migrants but to monitor and report their locations to the U.S. Border Patrol.
Mexican President Vicente Fox has called groups like Simcoxs immigrant hunters, and President Bush said last week, Im against vigilantes. Jennifer Allen of the Border Action Network says she is preparing a human-rights complaint against the U.S. government for failing to prosecute vigilante groups. Local officials in Arizona start to worry about hundreds of Minuteman volunteers coming from out of state. Michael Nicely, head of the Border Patrols Tucson sector, says the Minuteman Project will hamper border safety, TIME reports.

Next step: Bribe Mexico to keep their population at home. This may prove extremely expensive since Fox already gets $9 bill. per year in remittances. But the alternative -- invading and fixing Mexico isn't PC. We may have to wait until Muslim terrorists trained in Guadalajara blow up L.A..
Hmmm, is Pres. Bush against invasion, as well? One would like to think so.
A week or so ago, some congressman from a western state mentioned on Fox that tens of thousands of new border agents had been hired. He was cut off at that point, so couldn't tell if that was hyperbole.
"Gang will target Minuteman vigil on Mexico border"
This article ought to scare these kooky red neck vigilantes.

Never seen together in public (i.e. same person)?
I agree with the President. Anyone tresspassing on federal property - these vigilantes - need to be rounded up and put in federal detention."
Would you also stand for "trespassers" from Mexico being placed in "federal detention" too since they surely aren't classed as "guests" on "federal property"? BUT - on PRIVATE PROPERTY, the fate of invaders should be left entirely to the respective property owners.
If a confrontation occurs and MS13 members die because they crossed the wrong ones, maybe then some OB advocates will see these entering aren't all grape or lettuce pickers.
And I expect after a few of the mm klan get picked off, maybe some of the anti-immigrants will rethink this poor idea.
""This article ought to scare these kooky red neck vigilantes.""
So...are you saying because of the threat by a punk gang, the MM should just roll over, be scared and stay home? The fact that this gang thinks they can control America and it's legal citizens is all the more reason to fight for keeping these low-life types out of the USofA.
?!Oooh, the gangs are taking over America, let's go home, turn on the tv, cover our heads with a pillow and let them do it, that's chickencrap.
Not at all, but the leaders of this silly exercise need to ensure that the folks coming down to play cowboy are fully aware of the dangers.
Do you have insider knowledge or is this just surmise? They are not even supposed to make the official announcement until later this week so I'm curious as to how you know?
In December of 2004, the President signed the 911 Security/Intelligence Bill. Part of that bill authorized (but did not fund) the hiring of 10,000 new agents. These were to be hired 2000 per year for the next five years beginning in 2006. The President specifically praised this particular aspect of the bill.
In February of 2005, just barely over 30 days after signing the 911 bill the President submitted his budget for 2006. In it rather than requesting funding for 2000 new agents he requested funding for only 210 new agents. He basically undercut the will of Congress by 90% and they are pretty pissed about it and have been highly critical of the President. The Senate has already voted to up the budget back to 2000 agents and the House will shortly.
The final step after authorizing and budgeting for the 2000 new agents will be to actually appropriate the funds. That will likely happen next fall and we need to keep the heat on this issue to make sure it happens.
Nasty remark to make about brave fellow Americans.
Helps, but still not the complete answer. It needs to be the entire border. Border crossers will, HELLO, just find another entry point.
AND YES, Mr. Fox and Mr. Bush, THEY ARE ILLEGAL. Do your job and close those borders, sweep the nation clear of them. We are a sovereign nation and must remain so to be a #1 rate world power.
Our diversity, HELLO!! DIVIDES US, an United country is UNITED.
Since our government - both State and in DC, have decided to destroy America once and for all. It's that simple.
howdy M.I.
I see you're still putting up with the hyenas? ;^D
have a good day, my FRiend.
What a joke - Bush is not serious about our protection - we could stop this today if he would do the following
Penalize employers for hiring illegals
Take away ALL benefits
Put up a wall (optional if the first two are enforced)
