Can anyone explain what the legal difference is between "Consciencious Objector" (goes against the conscience) and "Contentious Objector" (Just is against what's being done)?

The difference is that a conscientious objector is a pacifist and is opposed to ALL wars. The other one opposes that one particular conflict he wants to wriggle out of serving in.

So one is an idealist, the other is a slacker?

When this guy joined...he should have figured out in basic training that military operations mean that you might have to hurt someone real bad...and kill a few bad guys along the way. For some idiot to come up a year or years later...and claim that he is a pacifist...is a joke. I am forever reminded of a guy who married a German woman prior to the first Gulf War, and she attempted to change him situation...to make sure he didn't go off to the war or hurt anyone...and he sat there for an entire weekend listening to her speeches...and on Monday morning, he simply packed up a bag and said adios to the wife and the marriage. Her brain-wash attempt didn't work...and had simply backfired. My guess is that there is a woman beind this navy guy...and he was brain-washed to some degree.

FD:
Thanks for the ping
Gold state is quite correct---A REAL CO is opposed to the concept of war. The "other" CO is just one of those morons that enlisted to get a free education, three hots and a flop, etc.......when the military is called upon to "Break things and kill people", they get a case of VERY cold feet.

I saw enough of that type in GW I. Elliott loves to really harangue them as only a 25 year Marine can.

IIRC, Churchill (not Ward, Winston) once wrote that Navy discipline was composed of "rum, floggings and sodomy" [at least in old days]. This guy's rum portion is to be distributed among the rest of the crew.

Perhaps the lack of "sodomy" is what made him contentious;0)

Well, I was suggesting that while the rum would be obviously wasted on him [hence his ration were to be distributed], he should have the rest of the discipline in full measure.

Hardly the equivalent of a civilian misdemeanor. When found guilty, it's the equivalent of a federal felony conviction.

Now if this guy refused to board the nuclear sub Jimmy Carter, I might be able to understand it.

True---but we expect knowledge to be part of the MSM?

"He has said he was young and naive when he joined the Navy and that he ''never imagined in a million years we would go to war with somebody who had done nothing to us.''"

Of course when this Deserter enlisted, the Navy had maintained a permanent presence in the Gulf enforcing sanctions and the No fly Zone for a decade.

The MSM is in the pocket of the anti-war movement by lieing to the public that this is a misdemeanor. This puke has just destroyed his life.

Yup!

Just took his life out and trashed it. If he wants to be naive to think that this is a little thing, let him. I'd give real money to be his counsel--just to see his smarmy little face when the roof falls in.
