IIRC, Churchill (not Ward, Winston) once wrote that Navy discipline was composed of "rum, floggings and sodomy" [at least in old days]. This guy's rum portion is to be distributed among the rest of the crew.
Perhaps the lack of "sodomy" is what made him contentious;0)
