Schiavo father: 'Down to her last hours'
CNN ^ | March 25, 2005

PINELLAS PARK, Florida (CNN) -- The father of Terri Schiavo, the severely brain-damaged woman whose feeding tube was removed a week ago, said Friday his daughter is "down to her last hours."

Bob Schindler, Schiavo's father, said, "Terri is weakening. ... Something has to be done, and has to be done quick."

Schindler said the family's hopes lie with the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta, Georgia, which is hearing -- for the second time this week -- an appeal claiming Schiavo's due process rights have been violated.

Schiavo is in her seventh day without food or water since Pinellas County Circuit Judge George Greer ordered the tube removed for the third time.

The case is again in the federal appeals court, where a three-judge panel will rule on the motion filed by attorneys for Schiavo's parents.

What does any of this have to do with doctors?

Doctors for Michael Schiavo have said that an MRI and PET are not necessary for Terri because PVS is primarily a “clinical” diagnosis, that is, one arrived at on the basis of examination of the patient, rather than by relying on tests. And the neurologists I have spoken to agree on the clinical nature of the diagnosis, while insisting that advanced tests nonetheless are a necessary part of it. But the star medical witness for Michael Schiavo, Dr. Ronald Cranford of the University of Minnesota, has repeatedly dismissed calls for MRI testing, and his opinion has prevailed.

Dr. Cranford was the principal medical witness brought in by Schiavo and Felos to support their position that Terri was PVS. Judge Greer was obviously impressed by Cranford’s résumé: Cranford travels throughout the country testifying in cases involving PVS and brain impairment. He is widely recognized by courts as an expert in these issues, and in some circles is considered “the” expert on PVS. His clinical judgment has carried the day in many cases, so it is relevant to examine the manner in which he arrived at his judgment in Terri’s case. But before that, one needs to know a little about Cranford’s background and perspective: Dr. Ronald Cranford is one of the most outspoken advocates of the “right to die” movement and of physician-assisted suicide in the U.S. today.

In published articles, including a 1997 op-ed in the Minneapolis–St. Paul Star Tribune, he has advocated the starvation of Alzheimer’s patients. He has described PVS patients as indistinguishable from other forms of animal life. He has said that PVS patients and others with brain impairment lack personhood and should have no constitutional rights. Perusing the case literature and articles surrounding the “right to die” and PVS, one will see Dr. Cranford’s name surface again and again. In almost every case, he is the one claiming PVS, and advocating the cessation of nutrition and hydration.

National Review

Seems Dr. Cranford was an "expert witness" in many cases and has an agenda. More info on him at the link. It has EVERYTHING to do with this doctor.

I think the scariest apect of this case is that this woman is being killed based on hearsay....you know, the type of evidence that's not allowed in a courtroom....you know, the place where it was determined that a woman should be killed based on hearsay.

...let's just say for the sake of argument, that Michael Shiavo DROPPED DEAD right this minute. What would happen then? Does custody of Terri revert automatically to her parents?...

-----
With the way these courts have ruled, they would probably give custody to M(F)S's fiance instead of her parents.

My dear cajungirl, if you were with me right now I'd hug you.
Such nice thoughts in this somber hour. My heart has been breaking all week and advanced at an alarming rate with death approaching this woman.

I thank you for your fine words. I wish that those voices be elevated throughout this land.

We wil soon all need it.

By that reasoning, how many 13 lines are there in the nation? How many 13 intersections? Billions?

Why you use arc minutes but not seconds?

God knows I don't want her to suffer, and I pray she isn't, but I've got to hope she hangs on another month and that her family can smuggle pictures out so that America can see what these liberal bastards stand for.

I understand your reasons for feeling this way, but as a Christian, I pray for both Michael and Terri. Seriously! May God forgive Michael!

Remember, we shall all be judged by the same standards we apply to others.
Even if it isn't easy to forgive someone in this situation, the best outcome is repentance and forgiveness for all.

Terri isn't equivalent to Christ. She is a sinner like the rest of us. She too, needs Christ as her Savior.

It is heartbreaking what is happening to her. She is an innocent woman being legally condemned to death because she has brain damage. This is wrong on so many levels.

Terri's needless death is a SYMPTOM of our judiciary problems. We no longer follow the Laws of God. We've become heartless LLIBERALtarians. We've allowed moral relativism to have positions of authority in our courts. Laws have been created to enforce this.

While we entertain ourselves to death, reach ever new highs on self esteem, indulge ourselves to new levels and turn our backs on the less fortunate or even our own kids - warehousing them in daycare so we have more money for material things, load up on Viagra for a better sex life ... we've become like the Greeks. BTW Viagra and products like that have seen a decline in sales. The reason is because mechanical sex isn't quenching the emotional satisfaction that is desperately sought.

We echo Pontious Pilate with "what is truth"? We systematically redefine laws to suit ourselves - believing our way is better. We mock timeless truisms - homosexuality, abortion etc.. are wrong. Now we are determining what adults should live or die based on what we consider a "worthwhile life". We're playing god to an extreme.

You may say well, "this won't happen to me". Are you SURE? What has happened to Terri - the flurry of legal maneuvers to legally save her life are unprecedented. Do you really think you would be saved? Need I mention that people have now been desensitized to this issue. The media will beat it to death till you don't want to hear any more.

It's all so sad. People tried to save her life, legally. We need a revival in this country and people making decisions that have common sense. There is no rational reason in the world why Michael should have remained her legal guardian. He has too many conflicts of interest to list. We'll probably never know all the details of abuse because Greer refused to UNSEAL her medical and financial records to DCF. You can't investigate properly if you do not have access to that information.

Appealing to the same courts and judges over and over again isn't going to bring about a difference answer and that is what they are doing. The judges are standing firm. At this point they just need to make her comfortable. When bleeding through the nose and mouth occurs it is near the very end. She is past the point of return. What you can do is if these judges are voted in - don't vote for ungodly people. Make changes in our laws - conflict on interest on the part of a "guardian" should be questioned and properly dealt with. I pray she goes peacefully without pain and her family is vindicated.

The Vatican just released word the Pope is not doing well....Terri and John Paul go together in suffering on good friday?

Those of us who follow Fatima, and the recent death of the last Fatima witness Sr. Lucia, weren't really expecting great things to happen going forward.

The next thing these people will try to do is euthanize the Pope. Just watch -- it will be suggested.

It's the fervent dispatch of disabled and useless that draws the parallel to Nazism. Can you explain why it should not, other than calling it "obsurd" [sic]?

I do agree about the hatred on the Terri threads, tho. Civility is the first thing to fall away in combatting evil I guess.
