Presidential Pardon Could Neutralize Judge Greer
Newsmax.com ^ | 3/24/05 | Carl Limacher and Newsmax staff

Legal experts say that if Florida Gov. Jeb Bush defies state judge George Greer and orders state troopers to rescue Terri Schiavo, he and any other officials who participate in such a move risk a contempt citation from Greer that could put them in jail.

But with a powerful ally in the White House, Terri Schiavo's would-be rescuers have nothing to fear from the runaway judge.

In 2001, President Clinton pardoned drug dealers, international money launderers - even FALN terrorists, who were spared in a blatant bid to win votes for his wife's Senate campaign.

The episode taught a bewildered nation that the powers of the president to pardon anyone he wishes are absolute and irrefutable.

Today, Clinton is the most popular American politician in the world and his wife is the frontrunning candidate for her party's presidential nomination. In other words, the Pardongate scandal's lasting political fallout was nil.

He even pardoned his own brother, who had been convicted of selling cocaine.

Should Gov. Bush decide to rescue Terri Schiavo by force in violation of Judge Greer's order, President Bush could do the same for his brother - along with any other officials the right-to-die judge tries to punish.

Would there be controversy? You bet. Would the Bush family's political enemies try to capitalize? Absolutely.

But a nation that forgives one president for pardoning terrorists will certainly forgive another who uses his pardon power to save a life.

Once Terri Schiavo begins to receive the treatment she's been denied for more than a decade, her condition will almost certainly improve. Nurses who have cared for her have already testified she can speak and eat without a feeding tube, in stark contradiction of Judge Greer's findings.

Terri's recovery, however minimal, would serve as powerful evidence that the Bush brothers did the right thing in coming to her rescue.

In the meantime, the nation would be spared the haunting specter of its government starving an innocent citizen to death.

I stand corrected on the powers of the presidential pardon. This just shows you can't believe everything you read in the newspapers. People wrote some stuff about Clinton that was factually incorrect.

I think this should happen....however, we'll not see it. This is extremely disappointing that the Bush Brothers WILL NOT take these measures to rescue TERRI.

STEP OUT THERE PRESIDENT BUSH OR GOV. BUSH...

That is ridiculous! Jeb Bush isn't going to risk his political future.

Correct. But POTUS doesnt have one. DoJ should have enforced the law Congress passed, without letting these weenies go to the courts for permission.

Before the President signed the Bill, DoJ Should have put a team in place to secure Terri, and remove her from Fla, to a negihbor state with a friendly Governor, Once the bill was signed, she should have been whisked away, while the Federal courts conducted the De Novo review Congress mandated.

Go back and read my follow-up post 119. Why don't you try reading ALL the posts before you try to belittle someone.

The "moron" in my tagline references a slur against bloggers from a journalism professor. But you choose to turn it into an insult against a freeper as well.

And you were wrong, both on the insult and with your position on presidential pardons. Yet you won't apologize for either.

DSH presented very convincing language that your position was wrong. You refuse to acknowledge it.

All I said was from the constitutional language itlooks like the President can only pardon federal crimes. But if W wanted to challenge it you never know... the DOJ is reading it literally, but the Supreme Court has been known (on numerous occasions) to read things into the Constitution that aren't written there.
Now go bother somebody else who cares...

If you read more carefully next time you would see that I didn't even have a position on pardons because I didn't care. I was trying to just chill people out with some humor and say the argument was moot since Jeb Bush would never be convicted by a jury.

Seriously, you need to take rome remedial reading comprehension courses and lighten up Francis.

Freepers have become anal retentive dorks lately. I mean a post where I joked about a tagline was deleted by the moderator! LOL. Freakshow Freepers.

At least Nathaniel Fischer had somewhat of clue that I was commenting on the tagline

If you're going to be anal retentive about people commenting on taglines, you might want to also ban the "offensive"
tagline.

Or you could just get a sense of humor. Either one.

You seem intent on beating a dead horse, don't you? I don't really care about this because it's a moot point. Jeb clearly is not going to defy Greer and the courts, or else he would have done so already. Therefore, he's going to do nothing that would break the law, and thus a pardon by W would not be necessary.
Why must you insist on carrying on an argument about a scenario that is completely hypothetical and that is not going to actually happen? I simply expressed my views about it, but you take it WAY too far.
Now quit sending me messages on this thread. I don't want to discuss this with you anymore. Go bother somebody else.

Exactly. It was a moot point when the thread started. That's why I joked about the pointlessness of it all.

You're the one that started annoying me with your anal BS. I wasn't even talking to you.

You're the one who was not correct. You're the one who came back to an open-ended post to those who assailed my initial comment. And now you want the last word, even as you say yet again that you don't want to discuss this. Fine with me, since you ain't worth debating anyway. Toodles.
