(Groton-WTNH, Mar. 24, 2005 7:42 AM ) _ Groton police responded to a medical emergency call around 5:00 a.m. this morning for a gunshot wound at the Electric Boat facility in Groton.
Police say that a 22-year-old sailor on duty aboard a submarine at Electric Boat has died from an apparent gunshot wound.
Due to federal jurisdiction, the investigation has been taken over by the local office of the Naval Criminal Investigation Service.
The name of the victim nor the circumstances of the shooting have not been released.
I was in my early 30's and had a college degree. I was an enlisted sonar tech with 14 years electric experience. I did not need to grow up then. I had been around the block.
I read many books (I wish I had that time now) and planned my future.
Must have taught you lots of patience, and tolerance of others. After a few months the guys I knew said the other guys could get on your nerves! Well, did the plans work out?
No it wouldn't, especially when the Below Decks won't bring up and coffee.
Ain't that the truth? The closest I ever came to freezing to death was a night topside watch in the Thames River at EB in the late winter. I don't think I would have committed suicide over a lack of hot coffee, but I dang well might have shot the below-decks watch!
I remember stowing mooring lines in the line locker on our ride at new London during sub school in December. My blues were soaking wet, now that's cold.
Thank You.........
Don't remind me--our topside did it back in 1990. Underway for TRE the next day.
The topside watch on the Los Angeles committed suicide a few years later (94-95?)--now THAT was a totally preventable situation. You should have heard of some serious khaki heads rolling but I don't know if that ever happened.
I don't believe there were firearms inside Electric Boat at all except at the guard shack when I worked there. Don't remember if there was a prohibition on them, but nobody carried them or if they did they didn't say anything.
