Ugh, this kind of stuff hurts my brain from the ridiculousness of it all. Did the two parties switch last weekend, or is it just me? Democrats are suddenly the party of small government and states rights (see the schiavo case), and Republicans are suddenly the party of suing people who aren't being "tolerant".

Is it too late to give Florida back to Spain?

I'm beginning to wonder myself.

It's not unlike the Bizarro World episode of Seinfeld.

"Sorry, we've already got a George..."

Who will pay for evolution if they can't get government to fund it?

Intelligent Design and Creationism belong in a theology or philosophy class and shouldn't take up more than a footnote in a science class. Republicans need to be smart and not swing the pendulum too far right. I don't agree with this academic bill of rights, nor do I agree with tenure for professors. Can't students just go to class without being indoctrinated by people with a clear agenda?

The bill sets a statewide standard that students cannot be punished for professing beliefs with which their professors disagree. Professors would also be advised to teach alternative “serious academic theories” that may disagree with their personal views.

A well rounded education? Wow. What a concept!
Creationism is referred to as a "theory", but so is evolution. Heck, the evolution theory was adopted from the Chinese egg legend, where a big egg exploded, and a gooey fish type lizard popped out and grew into a man. They got their legend from examining a human fetus. First it looks like a fish, then a lizard, then a monkey, and then a man.
Evolutionists say they have the skeletal remains of an evolving man, but they're missing one link. Somehow, they want us to believe an ape creature can change it's entire cerebral and spinal column from that of an ape to that of a bear in one quick "missing" jump and become a completely new creature - ta da! A man! Sheesh! .

According to a legislative staff analysis of the bill, the law would give students who think their beliefs are not being respected legal standing to sue professors and universities.

Does this apply to just the biological sciences or all disciplines? This is going to be hilarious when the muslims sue the law schools for failing to respect Sharia.

For a state of its size, Florida universities already have dismal reputation in the realm of biological sciences. This is just going to make it worse.

I don't think either should be taught, most kids are going to question what were taught when they get older anyhow. Of course the real debate is between the two theories, not which should be taught.

I don't fully understand evolution, I understand survival of the strongest and passing those genes on to the next generation, over and over again. And changing locations and environmental conditions and all that. What I don't get is how an aquatic species can ever evolve into an amphibious or terrestrial one, or vice versa. How can a species adapt to an environment it can't survive for one minute in?

My big questions with creationism are: How do dinosaurs fit into it? Since we know the bones are 65 million years old. And how do jillions of other planets and solar systems fit into it? I guess I'm asking anyone who wants to tackle it.

The fundamentalists believe they are on a roll now that W has been reelected. Indeed, they think they were the sum total of the people who put him in office, completely ignoring all the other Republican factions out there. And now, the fundamentalists believe they can push their agendas through legislatures. I figure there'll be a lot more of these abominable measures put before our representatives before it's all over.

"Students who believe their professor is singling them out for “public ridicule” – for instance, when professors use the Socratic method to force students to explain their theories in class – would also be given the right to sue."

Darn, wish I'd gone to law school in Florida. I could be getting back at my contracts professor for all my "hurt feeling" as we speak! This bill is great! It gives all Florida students standing to be whiny little wusses!

What is the Republican Party doing? I'm starting to believe that Andrew Sullivan is on to something.

Why in God's name are we acting like a bunch of PC Campus types all of a sudden? We hated it when the Lefties did it, but when we do it, it's okay? What business does a State freaking legislature have getting involved in the course work and lecture material of a professor at a University, private or state. This has to do with academic freedom, not the State's authority over a state university. Either a University is a place for free inquiry or it is not.

As I said, what the hell is my Party up to? We're supposed to be about liberty above all things. GW needs to start cleaning house before we get pegged as a gaggle of bluenoses. The Dhimmis hammered us in the Nineties with that moniker and it took an extraordinary man in GW to get us out of that ditch. The Stalinoids in the Dhimmitude party have no business appropriating the doctrines of states rights and small government from us.

But of course, free pills for Granny will do that to you. Being the majority party makes you the Party of the State. For now, the war is holding us together. I can see where victory will drive the coalition apart, however.

Be Seeing You,

Chris

This has the ability to do serious damage to Republicans. Creationism is a cancer on the Conservative cause.

My mom always told that politicians as a class aren't very smart.

Wow, never thought I'd see the spectacle of FReepers pimping for leftist professors "rights" to browbeat their students with ideological propaganda at the expense of their grades if they don't regurgitate the politically "correct" answer.

Tells me that I'm probably one of the few in this thread who has ever sat in a university classroom, and had to put up with it...

In fact, seeing some of the savants (...snicker...) in this thread, I'm convinced of it.
