I have been a Mac user since the first one rolled off the assembly line. I love them, and still have one, which I am using to write this post. The problem is that I bought a notebook PC because I have some work related needs that I couldn't use my Mac for.
My teenage son asked if he could check his email on the PC, and like an idiot, I said yes. He walked off with the notebook, and went to a web site that a friend had told him was "really cool". It became infected with spyware, ad ware and goodness knows what else. We have been running Norton anti virus on it, and have deleted all of the infected files several times. Some persistant ones pop up again when the computer re-starts, and now, Norton Anti Virus won't allow us to do any repair wizard fumctions. It tells us that it has deleted fioles, but won't let us do anything manually, and of course, the files aren't really deleted.
Our version of Norton Anti Virus came with the computer, and did not come with instructions.
Any suggestions that don't include bodily injury to my son, or buying another Mac would be appreciated!
I suggest Spybot or Spykiller.
Get adaware and spybot...
They usually do the trick.
Google each.
Go to www.adaware.com. Download the free adaware tool. It'll clean all the gunk out of your machine.
Will they get rid of spyware that is already infecting the computer?
Go to wwww.majorgeeks.com and download Spybot Search and Destroy (it is free and powerful). Update it on a regular basis. Since I downloaded it, I have not had any spyware problems.
I have gotten rid of ALL adware using ALL-In )ne-Secretmaker that I dl at download.com.
And it is free.
Yup.
Is that www.adware.com or www.adaware.com?
Go download Adaware or spybot (I think that's the name of the second one) it's free and it'll id and quarenteen all those malware, spyware, etc programs for you. I don't know what ports you've got open but you can use a program called bullguard, it's internet based firewall/anti-virus (both protects and disinfects) and sandbox tool. Costs $5/month and gives you a 100mg backup emergency storage off your computer. Want more, got to pay more. It updates constantly too.
Go here, read the instructions, then follow them. You won't be sorry, and will learn a lot. Good Luck. :-)

adaware. Spybot is also good.

Adaware, SpySweeper (by Webroot), Spybot, are all good.
I'd also recommend "Registry Optimizer". You can get all of these at www.download.com
Good luck!!
Spybot and Ad-Aware are both free and easy to download and use.
It doesn't matter if you have Norton or McAfee. You must still use the above daily!
Until Congress passes laws making hackers and malicious attackers punishable with severe penalties, there is not much recourse.
My recommendation is to give them (malwarers) the Teri Schiavo treatment!
You may be able to find aps for Macs.
