During the presidential campaign last year, George W. Bush talked about the need to promote a "culture of life." Anyone who dismissed such talk as just a way to spin antiabortion views without scaring pro-choice voters should pay closer attention. Today the Terri Schiavo case is revealing that protecting life is much broader than that single issue, and that it is a central component of Mr. Bush's governing philosophy.
With Congress passing and President Bush signing legislation early yesterday morning that may end up saving Mrs. Schiavo's life, some are now accusing Republicans of crass political motives. That misses the larger public debate joined in America and largely promulgated by those the media often dismiss as "the religious right." From stem cells to abortion, Americans are confronting questions about life--when it begins and when it ceases to be valuable--more than at any time in our history. Partly we have science to blame for this debate, since medicine can sustain life long past the body's ability to function on its own. But the debate is so intense because it is about the direction in which we'd like our culture to move.

The Republicans in Congress acted too late, and W. Bush got on this issue too late.
Our only faint hopes are the Florida legislature and
Jeb Bush.
Tell that to those looking for a scapegoat because the President isn't King and cannot act like it. I respect him, and those that have passed legislation at perceived political cost because they cherish life. That respect is not returned to those that argue it is political grandstanding or claim a president acting as a vigilante will help Terri.
Michael Schiavo is clearly compromised and his testimony had no business ever being considered, yet it his his testimony that has brought about the situation Terri is in today. May God have mercy on his soul....
I agree. Terri is running out of time. However, from what I understand of the meaning and intent of "Terri's Bill" was that the Federal judge (court) in Florida was instructed by the congress to start the entire case DE NOVO! He made an incorrect interpretation of the intent of the congress. That's the only peg on which the 11th Circuit court can hang a reversal, in my opinion. But Jeb and the Fl. legislature must try to do something. They CAN, but are falling short by one miserly vote!
Didn't he sign a bill in TX fully contrary to the situation in this case?
i still think that he means wat he says when he says he thinks that we shud create a culture or life because he signed this bill right away.
anyone who wasnt pro life at least when it came to this situation themself should die.
