Tonight it is, March 22, 2005, over five days since Theresa Marie Schiavo commenced her ordeal of purposeful and legally sanctioned dehydration and starvation. We await a decision from the three judge panel from Eleventh Judicial Circuit as to her fate, as her family struggles with seeing Terri's physical health deteriorate.

Because we are operating on a legal fantasy: The government is letting Terri die because of the legal fantasy that it was her wish to refuse medical treatment, and the court is there to enforce those wishes.

This fantasy is how they are doing this. And how they will come after anybody who is weak, vunerable and in need of long-term care. And it is evil.

Michael Schiavo, who has been living with another woman and sired two children with her, claims to love Terri. He told CNN that he will be with Terri until she dies from starvation/dehydration.

Michael has not allowed Terri to go outdoors to enjoy the sunshine and fresh air in over 4 years. He has banned Terri from having flowers, greeting cards, photos of her parents, and religious momentos in her room. During his numerous temper tantrums, he banned Terri's family from visiting her for several months last year.

Shortly after Terri collapsed and was admitted to a nursing home, Michael euthanized Terri's two cats instead of giving her pets to her family. Michael also melted down Terri's wedding band to make a piece of jewelry for himself. Yet he claims he always loved Terri.

Michael has a court order signed by Judge Greer to have Terri's body cremated without an autopsy. Terri will not receive a Christian funeral and burial. Her ashes to be taken to Pennsylvania, against Terri's family wishes to have her buried in Florida.

fMRI reveals large-scale network activation in minimally conscious patients

Background: The minimally conscious state (MCS) resulting from severe brain damage refers to a subset of patients who demonstrate unequivocal, but intermittent, behavioral evidence of awareness of self or their environment. Although clinical examination may suggest residual cognitive function, neurobiological correlates of putative cognition in MCS have not been demonstrated.

Objective: To test the hypothesis that MCS patients retain active cerebral networks that underlie cognitive function even though command following and communication abilities are inconsistent.

Methods: fMRI was employed to investigate cortical responses to passive language and tactile stimulation in two male adults with severe brain injuries leading to MCS and in seven healthy volunteers.

Results: In the case of the patient language-related tasks, auditory stimulation with personalized narratives elicited cortical activity in the superior and middle temporal gyrus. The healthy volunteers imaged during comparable passive language stimulation demonstrated responses similar to the patients’ responses. However, when the narratives were presented as a time-reversed signal, and therefore without linguistic content, the MCS patients demonstrated markedly reduced responses as compared with volunteer subjects, suggesting reduced engagement for "linguistically" meaningless stimuli.

Conclusions: The first fMRI maps of cortical activity associated with language processing and tactile stimulation of patients in the minimally conscious state (MCS) are presented. These findings of active cortical networks that serve language functions suggest that some MCS patients may retain widely distributed cortical systems with potential for cognitive and sensory function despite their inability to follow simple instructions or communicate reliably.

Please........PLEASE, can these threads be kept to saving Terri, and not belittling the Bush's? You may believe there is something else they could do, but to say they are at fault for this situation is, IMO, irresponsible. Their intervention in this single case is unprecedented.

Wonderdul post, Ohio. I feel the same way. I realize that many of us feel helpless but directing our anger at those who do not deserve it is so counter-productive. We are learning a great deal here. I have to keep telling myself that while I am praying unceasingly for Terri to be saved, it just may not be God's will. Terri's tragedy may bring about a grander good on a scale we cannot even imagine. We have to remember that we need to pray for all! Even our enemies.

She has talked about it off and on for some time, and then starting last Thursday it's been constant.

Laura's mission is to stop the runaway judiciary, and Terri's struggle with the judicial system is going to be a big issue in the history of this country forever now.

Laura won't let go of this problem that we have with this out-of-control judicial system. She, Mark Levin, and others are going to get the population awakened eventually, I'm sure of it.

Yes, and I am praying for that 'grander good on a scale we cannot even imagine' as well.

I still have great hope that Terri's life will be spared, and that she will be given to the custody of her dear, loving parents, but what is happening here, regardless of the outcome, has the potential for a great spiritual awakening among all Americans. We are flabby and soft in our faith (for the most part). The possibility of having a country that murders innocent disabled persons, and embraces a culture of death might well wake up the complacent.

I think every one of us, regardless of what state we live in, needs to begin a massive letter writing campaign to our local newspapers to make the unaware aware of this horrific tragedy.
