Schiavo 'fading quickly,' parents tell court

TAMPA, Fla. - Warning that Terri Schiavo is "fading quickly," her parents begged a federal appeals court Tuesday to order the severely brain-damaged woman's feeding tube reinserted while they pursue claims that her rights are being violated.

David Gibbs III, attorney for parents Bob and Mary Schindler, told the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta that their 41-year-old daughter might die before they get a chance to fully argue their case. The appeal came after a federal judge in Tampa rejected the parents' emergency request earlier Tuesday.

"Where, as here, death is imminent, it is hard to imagine more critical and exigent circumstances," Gibbs said in the appeal, filed electronically with the court. "Terri is fading quickly and her parents reasonably fear that her death is imminent."

"Why does Google have an icon of their letters half full of water drippinng into a bowl?"

I have wondered the same thing all day. At first I thought it was about spring, i.e. melting snow, but that doesn't make a lot of sense.

I hovered my curser over the Google logo (say THAT 3 times fast after a few drinks!) and a note popped up saying 'World Water Day'. So someone somewhere has declared this to be World Water Day and Google apparently is unsure whether the Googleglass is half-empty or half-full.

Thank you for a thoughtful, reasoned post and for adding the last paragraph.

"What's questionable is the finding of facts at the trial court level. And those make all the difference in the world to this case."

That is the best summary I have heard. And it is why all the judicial "review" in the world is just a bunch of judges patting themselves on the back, that they are doing the right thing; when in reality a GREAT injustice is being committed, that they all try to pretend they cannot see -- following the law so exactly as they claim to be.

Well, when the law itself is the reason that such an injustice can be perpetrated, then (as someone said) THE LAW IS AN ASS.

Being purely legalistic, and using that as cover to allow murder to be committed before all our eyes is, inexcusable and stupid. There IS a place for just plain common sense in the application of the law. Those who deny it are perpetuating foolishness.

Portuguese explorers were amazed when they arrived in Goa in the 1500s and there were practicing Christians there who told of a man from the west who had brought them the Gospel.

They do have a Florida law to interpret, and they do have a fact case.

Sorry, but when did this become to complicated?

A disabled woman without a "living will" has an estranged husband who wants this over; and a family ready and willing to accept all responsibility for her continued care and recovery.

Terri is aware of her surroundings, responds to it, feels pain, and does not need "extraordinary medical measures" to keep her alive; just food and water.

How do these circumstances translate into court-ordered murder?

Why isn't any of this stuff investigated? It seems the courts dismiss this information.

I know... Congress requested a "de novo" case (or so I thought). What's the harm of re-inserting the tube while a new set of eyes looks over all affidavits, etc. related to Terri's situation? It seems to me that all avenues haven't been exhausted...

madprof98,

At the risk of offending you, you have just hit the nail on the head. Many Catholics are taught that by the Baptism itself, are they saved. And then they must always follow it with other acts, not faith, nor acceptance of Jesus.

When a church (any church) begins to do things by categories (such as communion at/by such an age, and so on) it begins to be about numbers and in those numbers strength.

The problem isn't just with the laity; it starts right there in the office of the Priesthood. There are many non-believers in the Priesthood. And though God's WORD will never return empty, a non-believer will never, ever, encourage someone to really read the Word deeply, for fear of it truly Calling them.

The tragedy is that this truth is only brought to light in times of great moral crisis, such as this event. And this, my friend, has been a long time coming.

I havent been following all the posts TOO MANY

But has it been discussed that since the feeding tube was removed on Friday and the media is showing more video of Terri that the polls have changed? Just a few days ago it was 63 percent supporting the husband and now its dropping quick.

Maybe all this won't result in any changes to the law today, but the debate it fostered will lead to changes in the law, that are constitutionally sound so that future incidents like this will not occur. Maybe it's too late to save Terri, but perhaps, her death will not be in vain. Had Terri's parents not fought the fight, then nothing would have changed.

This is a hospice that she is in, hospices are where people go to die.

That is true enough, conserv13, that "hospices are where people go to die," but Terri should have been put in a Rehab Facility from the very beginning and if "dear, loving hubby" truly cared for Terri to recover, he would have her in a rehab facility even as we "speak." He put her in hospice so she would not have a chance of recovering, IMVHO. That one fact alone (placement in hospice rather than rehab) shows suspicious behavior on M. Schiavo's part...again, IMVHO.

It became pretty complicated when the Florida legislature provided for withdrawing health care from certain patients.

Some people lament the fact that we conservatives are arguing passionately over this issue. I consider it healthy.

They probably have her on pain meds.

Can anyone clarify...do people in so-called "persistent vegetative state" feel pain or require pain medication? I thought M. Schiavo said on Larry King Live that Terri was just going to peacefully or painlessly slip away after feeding tube was removed...

Probably because most conservatives are for preserving innocent human life is why we argue so passionately for it. I know that I can't just keep quiet about something like this :)
