SEATTLE - A man who reportedly held a knife to an infant's throat Monday was shot and killed by a Seattle police officer, authorities said. The infant was unharmed.
A standoff began late Monday afternoon when officers responded to a domestic dispute call at an apartment complex in the 6500 block of Rainier Avenue South, Officer Sean Whitcomb said.
A woman opened the door and appeared "hesitant," and officers could see a 4-year-old child "cowering," with a man in the background holding a knife, he said.
Officers got the woman, the 4-year-old and another child out of the apartment, but the man had the infant and alternately held the knife to the baby's throat and stomach, Whitcomb said.
The child was estimated to be 5 to 7 months old, he said.
Eventually, an officer with a rifle got a clear angle and shot the man once, he said.
A King County medical examiner's investigator confirmed Monday night that the man had died. He was not immediately identified.
The woman is the mother of the children, but her relationship to the man was not immediately known, and additional details on the dispute were not immediately available.
The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation.

Tragic? You do know the cop shot a man holding a knife to a 5-7 month old baby's throat, don't you? If this is still a tragic death in your eyes, you've got problems.

Afterwards, the instructor (a friend) pointed out that there was a much easier groin shot below the carrier. Can't say that I noticed or thought of that!

The news video in my mind has this baby flying through the air and a hero diving across the room and catching it in his/her hands.
Where was he shot? Face? The neck? I hate it when they leave out the juicy details. Sigh.
