RED LAKE, Minn. - A high school student went on a shooting rampage on this Indian reservation Monday, killing his grandparents at their home and then seven people at his school, "grinning and waving" as he fired, authorities and witnesses said. The gunman was later found shot to death.

It was the nation's worst school shooting since the Columbine massacre in 1999.

More About The Red Lake Indian Reservation

Mar 21, 2005 8:34 pm US/Central
Red Lake, Minn. (AP) The Indian reservation where 10 people died in a shooting spree Monday is located in a remote area of northern Minnesota, and is home to one of the poorest tribes in the state.

About 5,000 people live on the Red Lake Indian Reservation, almost all of them American Indians. The Red Lake Chippewa Tribe itself has about 9,400 enrolled members.

The reservation is about 240 miles northwest of the Twin Cities, and the town of Red Lake is about 75 miles south of the Canadian border.

Nearly 39 percent of the families on the reservation live below the poverty line. Because the reservation is so remote, the tribe has largely missed out on the lucrative casino revenues that some other Minnesota tribes enjoy. The profits from its Seven Clans Casinos in Red Lake, and off the main reservation in Warroad and Thief River Falls, pale compared with those earned by tribes closer to the Twin Cities.

That is why tribal leaders decided to join with two other tribal bands in Gov. Tim Pawlenty's proposal for a joint state-tribal casino in the Twin Cities area, a proposal that is pending before the Legislature.

The tribe and the federal government have primary law enforcement authority on the reservation, and serious crimes that happen here are prosecuted in federal court instead of state court. The tribe can jail someone for only up to a year.

Outsiders are sometimes unwelcome on the reservation. Tribal police ordered reporters off the reservation after Monday's shootings, and nonmembers are not allowed to fish on any part of Lower Red Lake, or on most of Upper Red Lake. The two lakes make up a good chunk of the reservation.

I don't think they'll get more casinos, it sounds to me like they banded with other tribes in the state and will share the profits. At least that's my take.

(sigh) yes, another . Rocori HS shooting a few years back- similar deal. the shooter got the guns from his dad who is a LEO.
And I wonder why I get sick of libs and metropolitan PD Chiefs telling me only police should have guns.

According to the wonderful folks at SeeBS, the gunman killed both of his grandparents before taking his spree to the school. The grandfather was a 31 year police vet, said the Fire Dept. employee they interviewed.

Well, when an Indian goes berserk it usually is because of one of three likely reasons, (1) squaws, (2) fire water or, (3) buffalo. Although, I guess it could be in response to the murder of Paul Wellstone and the subsequent defeat of Kerry.

The weapon the murderer used was the grandfather's service weapon. He was a law enforcement officer. I wonder how the gun grabbers will spin this one to ban our guns.

Every single gun control law ever passed has exemptions for police/government.

I think the police should have to leave their service revolvers locked up safely at the police station when they are off duty, and turn them in for good when they retire. Nobody needs them anyway.

If I didn't know you better, I would be shocked by your statement. Please tell that a Navy SEAL would never, ever believe that. See sarcasm can cut both ways :)

I'm beginning to wonder about all these mass shootings in such a short period, just when new and more onerous gun control legislation is put before Congress and the state legislatures. This sort of thing has happened before. It's said that once is happenstance, twice is coincidence, but three times is enemy action. (repeated by Neal Knox, about the time the AW Ban and Brady Act were passed, IIRC)

So do I, but I don't wonder that they will.

that no Native Americans can own guns...
