Camilla 'set to become Queen'
Press Association (UK) | March 21, 2005

Posted on 03/21/2005 1:59:08 PM PST by HAL9000

Camilla Parker Bowles will automatically become Queen when the Prince of Wales succeeds to the throne unless there is a change in the law, the Government has confirmed.

The Department for Constitutional Affairs admitted legislation would be needed no matter what Camilla wished to call herself when Charles becomes King to prevent this happening.

It is believed to be the first time the government has acknowledged this stance on the record. Clarence House has previously insisted the government agreed with its view, taken from legal advice, that it was only a convention for the wife of the King to be known as Queen.

The Prince's aides did admit, when the royal engagement was announced, that legislation might be needed to tidy the issue up later on. Mrs Parker Bowles will be known as the Duchess of Cornwall after her marriage and intends to take the title Princess Consort when the Prince accedes the throne.

A Department for Constitutional Affairs spokeswoman confirmed legislation would be needed for Camilla not to become Queen automatically on Charles's succession. "I think traditionally that's probably the case because in all similar circumstances in the past in past royal marriages that is what has happened," said the spokeswoman.

"But I think she is not going to be referred to as Queen, she will be referred to as the Princess Consort."

Asked about the position of other countries where the Prince of Wales would become head of state on his succession, the spokeswoman replied: "I think you are right in thinking it would require legislation for her not to be Queen."

Prime Minister Tony Blair's official spokesman said: "The position at the moment is limited to what the title would be on her marriage. In terms of any future events, let's wait until future events arise."

On the question of whether Mrs Parker Bowles would automatically become Queen in the absence of legislation, the spokesman added: "I'm not disputing what you have said."

A Clarence House spokesman said that its viewpoint had not changed, and that Camilla and the Prince were entirely happy that she be known as Princess Consort when he becomes King.

So, has Chuckie just been caught trying to snooker his subjects...?

Reality is that Charles will never be King, so the issue is moot. That is why Mummy allowed him to get his horse.

Yet another reason to be glad that Cornwallis sent out his aide to surrender.

she will be referred to as the Princess Consort

That's a very fitting title for a homewrecker.

The thing about being a subject is that you don't get to pick your monarchs. If people don't like the idea of genuflecting before Camilla, let them apply for US citizenship.

Agreed, he should have. Of course, Mr. Parker-Bowles might have had something to say about it...

Terri's life is hanging by a thread.

Jessica Lundsford was murdered.

The trial of the pervert who killed the little girl in Calif a couple years ago and thrown on the side of the road is about to begin.

And we CARE whether Bowles becomes Queen or NOT???? Dear God...this society has really gone ballistic. Who cares whether she becomes Queen? Is that news? Will it change the world? Will it save the world? Will it save murdered children? Will it keep children from being kidnapped? Will it save murdered babies in the womb?

What a silly, silly, unimportant irrelevant story. Incredible...absolutely out and out incredible. I'm in awe of what is considered news these days.

Coincidently, "Queenie" is the 13th most popular name for female dogs.

Ah, the lovely Camilla is indeed an appropriate choice by the imbecilic Charles to be Queen of England!

The Royal family is intellectually bankrupt with all members being about as intelligent as a bag of rocks.

It's indeed unfortunate for The United Kingdom that their entire Royal Family is the worst in European history. Yes, I know that takes in a lot of territory.

I can't believe you took the time to write that long a response to a thread you consider unnewsworthy!

Wouldn't that time have been better spent rereading something more important?

LOL. Been there, done that. A few generations ago. Best darn decision the family ever made :)

Oh come on, do you really think that any of us are losing sleep or expending much mental energy thinking about Camilla? Of course not. But sometimes it's nice to have a thread about something not as meaningful and intense as life and death. (And of course, issues of morality do come into play, even with a thread like this one.)

It reminds me of the headline from The Onion's "Our Dumb Century", regarding the abdication of King Edward VIII:
