WASHINGTON -- The nation's undocumented immigrant population surged to 10.3 million last year, spurred largely since 2000 by the arrivals of unauthorized Mexicans in the United States, a report being released Monday says.
The population of undocumented residents in the United States increased by about 23 percent from 8.4 million in the four-year period ending last March, according to the analysis of government data by the Pew Hispanic Center, a private research group.

That equates to a net increase of roughly 485,000 per year between 2000 and 2004. The estimate was derived by subtracting the number of unauthorized immigrants who leave the United States, die or acquire legal status from the number of new undocumented immigrants that arrive each year.
The prospect of better job opportunities in the United States than in their native countries remains a powerful lure for many immigrants, said Pew center director Roberto Suro, pointing to a reason often cited by other researchers.
"The border has been the focus of federal efforts (to cut illegal entry) and has not produced a reduction in flow. Certainly that's an indication of ongoing demand," he said.
The population is growing at a similar pace as in the late 1990s even though the U.S. economy today isn't as robust, Suro said.
Assuming the flow of undocumented immigrants into the country hasn't abated since March 2004, the population is likely near 11 million now.
The report considered "undocumented" immigrants primarily as those here illegally; those in the United States on expired visas; or those who violated the terms of their admission in other ways.

And just HOW was that number arrived at.?..
Counting people that are hiding cannot be an easy task...
Obviously its much WORSE than that... in numbers
10 million is a lot.. got a feeling is 2 or 3 times that number or more.. since its veritably LEGAL to be Illegal in Mexifornia..
This whole thing stinks.. and its isn't a matter political party either.. this issue lies at the bottom not the top of a bigger issue.. Both parties are complicit in the illegal alien invasion.. its NOT happenstance.. its ON PURPOSE.. Aided and encouraged by the Administration in power..
Bottom line it could be stopped not overnight but easily within say 3 months.. at least the bulk of them could be stopped.. and a phased return of the illegals here now.. or they would melt BACK over the border like they came..
Thats not happening.. why.?. Why INDEED...
Don't blame me, I threw my vote away!
What's an "undocumented" immigrant?
How much have your property taxes and insurance rates gone up in the last few years? Isn't it also gratifying to know that the payroll taxes your employer pays is supplementing all the crooks hiring illegals and evading numerous payroll taxes. You might want to broaden your observation of this matter a little more because many hardworking Americans have been replaced by NON-TAXPAYING illegals.....the job you save may be your own.
Anybody who lives in LA knows of the MS13 gang - which is made up almost entirely of illegals from Mexico and Central America. The local cops could arrest them all for simply being here illegally but even when they are deported the illegals end back up in LA.
I'm for building a prison in Mexico and letting the Mexicans run it cheap. We can round up all of the illegals and put them in prison IN Mexico for a lot less and get the violence criminal ones out of state systems and out of circulation in another country. Longer sentences will prevent them from illegally re-migrating back to LA.
With all these immigrunts sucking up all the expensive goobermint services this economy hasn't got a chance. We'll be folded into the NWO a lot quicker with this expensive burden weighing everyone down.
For English press one.
If we hold employers accountable then this should not be a problem. Also, the there will be 11 million or more people offically paying taxes.
Another key question should be what's going to happen when the inevitable day comes and their welfare benefits are stopped...don't think they're going to be very happy amigos....LA will be toast within a week.
You sound like a young impressionable guy so I'll be easy on you. Yes, business is business but how we can we have a viable economy where businesses are playing by different sets of rules? Hiring illegals is a violation of federal law yet it still happens.......how many federal laws could you break and still stay out prison? We cannot survive with a two tier system where some are forced to play by the rules and others in the "in crowd" go completely scott-free.....that's called a banana republic .......do we really want to degenerate that far?
Yes, many businesses do lower their costs by hiring illegals.....but do they pass on their savings to their customer base?.......don't think so. Prices for many goods and services are very high even though business owners have replaced Americans with illegals.......it isn't too hard to figure out that whatever a business saves by BREAKING THE LAW and hiring illegals is going into the owners/shareholders pocket. Invariably these people hire illegals at minimal wages and then stick the taxpayers with the rest of the living expenses (food, medical, housing, etc.)......some deal huh?
Keyword aztlan, reconquista, MECHA, el plan de aztlan and you'll see there's much more to this picture.
And the problem.?.
That would be a good thing.. an illegal riot..
However that won't happen.. All riots must be routed thru Compton and East L.A...
The drug lords won't have it.. would disrupt too much business.. and put light on the mule train.. they've worked too hard to create..
My guess is that multiplying that figure by a factor of between 2 and 3 would be more accurate.
That sounds close, or it may be higher.
I'd be about willing to bet that number is arrived at by taking apprehension stats and multiplying by the number that ICE says escape notice at the borders - 2 to 3 get through for every one caught.
The agents themselves (as well as residents here) will tell you the number is much closer to 7-10 make it through for every one caught.
I couldn't agree more!
I'll bet we got another 10 mill in L.A. alone last year!
And it's an act of treason to allow it.
But we won't hold employers accountable. We have not in the past and we won't in the future. Congress passed the most comprehensive employers sections laws back in 1996. As of today, they go unenforced.
