German opposition to fight for China sanctions

BERLIN Opposition parties in Germany are hoping to split Chancellor Gerhard Schröder's coalition in a bid to maintain an arms embargo against China, a highly sensitive issue on both sides of the Atlantic, according to senior party members.

The Christian Democrats and Liberals have requested a vote in the Bundestag, the lower house of the German Parliament, which they say will test the government's commitment to human rights in China.

Should the vote be successful, it could swing the mood inside the European Union. Also, the move could please the U.S. government, which is staunchly opposed to arms deliveries to China.

Elmar Brok, a leading German member of the European People's Party and head of the European Parliament's foreign policy committee, said it was time the opposition in Germany "called the bluff of the Greens."

"This issue is about human rights," Brok said in an interview. "Let's see if the Greens are united in having the embargo lifted."

But aren't the Greens "Red" on the inside?

Yes, they are, but on the other hand they are also pacifists, and are (at least supposed to be) against all weapons trade.

This is going to cause real problems for the Greens, and especially for Foreign minister Joschka Fischer.

(It couldn't have happened to a nicer man.) /sarcasm

The SPD/Greens are a real freak show!

As I have said MANY times. US/German relations will not improve until this creep Schroeder and Fischer are gone. Turkey buy off, UN veto for Iraq resolution, supporting arms sales to China, undermining NATO………… Unbelievable!

In Germany the whole China arms trade issue gets “some” media attention, but not much. Even then, it’s often a pseudo sales pitch for why it’s OK.

I like to call them watermelons. Went to a debate a long time ago: Resolved - Green is another shade of red.
