Well, everyone, including Putin, knows for sure that Taiwan is not going to give up her long-term, de facto freedom, sovereignty and form of government without a fight, so...

Russia must say and establish this possition, because if Russia ever wants to retake old areas in the future, this must be their view now and consistantly in the future.
Years from now, we might see Russia trying to retake old coutries they had before.
This may be a little wake up call to us all regarding Russia.

I think, that in the end, Taiwan will reunite with mainland China. But it will be a long time from now when generations have forgotten the past.
I think that the beginning of a reunification will happen at the FINANCIAL and TRADE levels first. China might start making offers to Taiwan that it simply can't refuse. I envision MONEY being a factor in bribing the Taiwanese to buy lots of cheap land and get unlimited cheaper labor. I can see the Taiwanese government being BOUGHT...and them selling the idea of reunification to the people.
Promises of freedom and independence can always be made by anyone. Hong Kong hasn't fallen under the sickle yet....but it hasn't been long, has it?
Just a thought.

A place belongs to the people who live there. And Taiwan belongs to the Taiwanese regardless of what Pukin or the Chinese think.
And America will defend Taiwan.

Putin will undermine himself in Chechnya by claiming that Taiwan is a question of China's territorial integrity.
Just as we would not want Russia to support separatists in the US, we should not be supporting muslim separatists in Russia or China, but Putin should not equate Chechnya with Taiwan.
He is doing so because he wants to justify keeping Russian troops deployed in places outside the Russian borders, such as Georgia and Moldova, which used to be part of the Soviet empire.

I agree completely in the one-China policy. The mainland is a renegade province of the Republic of China government on Taiwan and should surrender at once.

Putin wants to help set a precedent so he can invade the former "Republics" of the Soviet Socialist Republics and re-establish the old Commie regime.
