Well, everyone, including Putin, knows for sure that Taiwan is not going to give up her long-term, de facto freedom, sovereignty and form of government without a fight, so...

Russia must say and establish this possition, because if Russia ever wants to retake old areas in the future, this must be their view now and consistantly in the future.
Years from now, we might see Russia trying to retake old coutries they had before.
This may be a little wake up call to us all regarding Russia.

Does Russia understand that China also claims (on good historical grounds) a very large chunk of the Russian far east?

I think, that in the end, Taiwan will reunite with mainland China. But it will be a long time from now when generations have forgotten the past.
I think that the beginning of a reunification will happen at the FINANCIAL and TRADE levels first. China might start making offers to Taiwan that it simply can't refuse. I envision MONEY being a factor in bribing the Taiwanese to buy lots of cheap land and get unlimited cheaper labor. I can see the Taiwanese government being BOUGHT...and them selling the idea of reunification to the people.
Promises of freedom and independence can always be made by anyone. Hong Kong hasn't fallen under the sickle yet....but it hasn't been long, has it?
Just a thought.

Yes, but Putin has other concerns. China isn't going to make a dash north anytime soon--they're headed everywhere but Siberia right now.
Besides, Putin won't be in office if the Chinese want another border war, so what does he care?

A place belongs to the people who live there. And Taiwan belongs to the Taiwanese regardless of what Pukin or the Chinese think.
And America will defend Taiwan.

Putin will undermine himself in Chechnya by claiming that Taiwan is a question of China's territorial integrity.
Just as we would not want Russia to support separatists in the US, we should not be supporting muslim separatists in Russia or China, but Putin should not equate Chechnya with Taiwan.
He is doing so because he wants to justify keeping Russian troops deployed in places outside the Russian borders, such as Georgia and Moldova, which used to be part of the Soviet empire.

Are we going to be pulled into a silly-assed school yard fight by the playground bullies, China and Russia?
This whole thing is a childish prank staged by our so-called friends.
The arrogant Chinese understand how stupid we are judging by how we have ignored their complicity in the WOT. This is just more of the same manipulation.

I agree completely in the one-China policy. The mainland is a renegade province of the Republic of China government on Taiwan and should surrender at once.

" and America will defend Taiwan"
I think that's that's the bottom line. For the immediate future it's not likely China will try out it's fledgling navy against ours in a cross the straits move. But who knows what the future will bring.
IMHO Russian would try and take back everything it lost from when it was the old soviet union. But not China.
China would like the world. There is only one country and a handful of allies who can stop either of them.

Wakeup hell, has anything changed? Yeah...china got enormous nuclear info from klinton and we have enormous trade with both countries now, just to mention two things...as far as the two changing, no, nothing has changed as far as ideology, but their better off thanks to traitors in our country.
