House Majority Leader Tom DeLay pledged Friday to hold Florida state judge George Greer in contempt of Congress for ignoring a congressional subpoena for Terri Schiavo's testimony, saying, "No little judge sitting in a state district court in Florida is going to usurp the authority of Congress."
"The Congress will pursue this, if we have to hold him in contempt of Congress," DeLay told radio host Sean Hannity.
Pressed on whether he intended to hold Judge Greer in contempt, the top Republican told Hannity: "Absolutely, absolutely."
"We will do everything to enforce the power and authority of the Congress and no little judge sitting in a state district court in Florida is going to usurp the authority of Congress," he added.
Earlier in the day Judge Greer rebuffed the Schiavo subpoena, telling attorneys in the case, "I have had no cogent reason why the [congressional] committee should intervene." He claimed that the last-minute action on the part of Congress does not nullify years of legal proceedings.
But DeLay told Hannity, "This judge and the Supreme Court of Florida are well known to be liberal judges that have a different worldview and they're imposing their worldview on the law."
The top House leader said that "no sane person" could look at Schiavo and say she's in a persistent vegetative state.
DeLay called a lawyer for Michael Schiavo, who has pressed for years to have his wife starved to death, "the personification of evil."
In any case, why are you so hell-bent to give the power of life and death to some judge, because "it's the law"? I can think of alot of bad laws that have been over-turned.And that is the essence of the argument: what is RIGHT and what is WRONG.
Or does it somehow offend you that this woman's family is willing to care for her?
Some "Republicans" are obviously not on our side! Most are just media whores.
I have recently taken to visiting the websites of certain senators...first it was Zell Miller, now it is John Cornyn, George Allen, and Orrin Hatch. Very good reading and study.
What is DeLay's site?
BTT!
The supreme court of Florida has no jurisdiction over federal laws, which trump the Florida consitution each and every time.
Always follow the money.
I don't suppose you can provide a link for that? And how would the Schindlers know if Michael Schiavo insured his wife's life?
I think that Mr. Schiavo turned down an offer of a substantial sum of money a few days ago. It doesn't seem as if money is the motivating factor here.
One of the things that bothers me about all this is the choice to withhold nutrition to induce death, which I should think would be a rather lengthy process. If folks are willing to accept responsibility for inducing her death, why would they not accept a manner of death (e.g., an overdose of opiates) that might be somewhat quicker? Have they convinced themselves that by withholding nutrition they are not playing an active role in her death? Isn't that a bit delusional?
But in this case, how do you know whether or not Terri wants to die? No one, aside from Michael, heard her say that she would have wanted to be put to death if she were ever incapacitated. As another person wrote, we must err on the side of life. If we could just give her speech therapy, maybe we could finally hear what she wants. How about that? If we could give her speech therapy, she'll tell us whether she wants to be dead or alive.
Excellent post, Mr/Mrs Texas. :)
Using Scott Peterson here is appropriate. Both wanted their wives dead. The difference here is the Judge has allowed approx 8 years of Torture by Schiavo towards his wife. ie.. Prisoner in Death house of Hospice, no therapy, no fresh air, and etc.
As if that isn't bad enough, Judge gives him an execution order of Starvation.
Question: Why is Peterson in Jail - While Schiavo sleeps well tonight, well feed and drunk.
Judge Greer didn't just get tired of this case. He wants it to go away.

So a man with a 10 year long live-in relationship with his mistress and 2 children with her has no "conflict of interest" in this situation!
I don't know whether to laugh or cry.
No. But Michael Schiavo has been offered 10 million dollars to divorce Terri.
You know, the Internet is marvelous. It gives us a chance to talk directly to the Devil and tell him to hat up, eh?!
Because their job does not entail the examination of such issues.
If I offer to let a trial court judge look out a window, and he refuses and announces the sky is green, an appeals court can't say the sky is blue. The appeals court could remand the case to the trial court judge with instructions to look out the window, but if he does so and still claims the sky is green, an appeals court can do nothing further.
You have a lot of room to talk.
That you are a contemptable jerk? Just a guess.

What if I happen to be an attorney? Do I need to hire one?
Does this Greer character have a wife?
