DeLay Pledges Contempt Charge for Terri Judge

House Majority Leader Tom DeLay pledged Friday to hold Florida state judge George Greer in contempt of Congress for ignoring a congressional subpoena for Terri Schiavo's testimony, saying, "No little judge sitting in a state district court in Florida is going to usurp the authority of Congress."

"The Congress will pursue this, if we have to hold him in contempt of Congress," DeLay told radio host Sean Hannity.

Pressed on whether he intended to hold Judge Greer in contempt, the top Republican told Hannity: "Absolutely, absolutely."

"We will do everything to enforce the power and authority of the Congress and no little judge sitting in a state district court in Florida is going to usurp the authority of Congress," he added.

Earlier in the day Judge Greer rebuffed the Schiavo subpoena, telling attorneys in the case, "I have had no cogent reason why the [congressional] committee should intervene." He claimed that the last-minute action on the part of Congress does not nullify years of legal proceedings.

But DeLay told Hannity, "This judge and the Supreme Court of Florida are well known to be liberal judges that have a different worldview and they're imposing their worldview on the law."

The top House leader said that "no sane person" could look at Schiavo and say she's in a persistent vegetative state.

DeLay called a lawyer for Michael Schiavo, who has pressed for years to have his wife starved to death, "the personification of evil."

I can just imagine if Christopher Reeves wife had decided to stop feeding him after his accident - there would have been judges at every level falling all over themselves to order the tube be put back into him.

"Ah-nold" is thinking that the Governor of Florida is the person to handle this

But I said to speak out on the issue. People always speak out on issues, even if they are not the authority immediately involved - or in Jeb's case, who SHOULD be immediately involved. I just wondered - where ARE the Special Olmypics people on this? Haven't heard, not a word.

One thing really concerns me about this. They know Congress is going to do something. Is there anything to prevent the Hospice from administering morphine in the guise of pain killer, to actually hasten Terri's death? We know that MS wants her dead asap.

The truth has a way of presenting itself. I just pray it does in time for Terri.

Christopher Reeves was still 'in there' unlike Terri.

Well, what would happen is that the hubby as the guardian would ignore the subpoena, and that would go to federal court. I don't really see how Greer is in the loop at all on the contempt thingie, procedurally. Do you?

A better question. Since when is it the business of the courts to pass legislation?

It's not. Neither is it the legislature's business to interfere with a court order in a pending case using the sham that they want a woman who can't talk to testify.

Congress frankly should butt out based on states' rights issues, but they waited until the last second to do anything. It was clumsy and it was obviously phony. Terri isn't going to testify to anything anytime soon and probably not ever.

As a legal strategy, though, it was brilliant. I never thought Greer would dare call their bluff. I'm sure DeLay and others were equally surprised.

Congress could have cut the legs off Greer by passing legislation yesterday. I'm not sure it would have been constitutional, but I doubt Terri would be hungry tonight if they did pass it.

They failed. They'll try again on Monday, and they'll probably succeed. At least for awhile.

This is all red meat blather for the Religeous Right.

Oh yeah! In this whole, damnable, ugly situation, it's the RELIGIOUS PEOPLE who are the enemy.

At some point, someone, somewhere, has to step in and stand against monsterous evil. If the laws of the state of Florida fail to enable a state stand against it, let the feds take it on, and to hell with "states rights." We can argue constitutional issues until we're all blue in the face, but if the "constitution" allows such things like what we're seeing in Florida to go on, then let's burn the whole damned structure to the ground -- constitution and all -- and start over.

Yes, where is Teddy Kennedy and the rest of the clan? You'd think they'd be sympathetic, given sister Rosemary's brain damage.

The separation of powers? Since when have states had rights to make any decisions? All of a sudden a state judge tells the government to FO? I'm not realizing the Consitiutional correlation.

because he could speak? so if in addition to being a quadraplegic, he had also lost his ability to speak, his wife could have stopped feeding him? is that your claim?

Whatever happened to Stop Violence Against Women that the Democrats were praising last week?

Whatever happened to division of Church and State that the left spews when they are on a rampage to take God out of our schools and public places.

Terry Schiavo is a devout and practicing Catholic. It is my understanding that the Catholic Church abhors suicide even if it is assisted suicide, it is a mortal sin. It is murder.

The State does not have the right to separate Terry from her Catholic beliefs and doctrine.

Terri has never had legal representation -- there is no way Greer can deny that.
