ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — A 5-year-old girl was arrested, cuffed and put in back of a police cruiser after an outburst at school where she threw books and boxes, kicked a teacher in the shins, smashed a candy dish, hit an assistant principal in the stomach and drew on the walls.

So what was her parents' reaction to the child's actions? I'm afraid that if this had been my child, she would have not been able to sit down for a week! THEN, after getting her attention, I would have taught her how cows eat cabbage, and how she was expected to behave!

When my second grader (in a flamingly liberal school that wouldn't touch him and he knew it) acted up like this (though not quite this rotten, or I would have killed him) I showed up in the principal's office and broke a wooden spoon on his butt. He never did it again.

The whole class suffered, but because he had an IEP (I forget what they said was wrong with him) and 2 lawyers for parents, the district had its hands tied. When I was there he threw a chair at his aide. The kids acted as if it was normal.

Many of these stories that get posted about children being arrested do not include the face that due to mainstreaming, there are mentally ill and retarded children at schools and they are out of control. Which is one of the reasons why they used to have special schools of their own.

Or...they're just brats that have no semblance of self-control. I think that my interpretation is closer to the truth IMHO.

No excuse! I raised a little girl by myself and she never behaved like that. She's 20 now, but a few years ago, we watched some teens on the news get roudy and rough up a news van, trying to knock it over. The parents came pouring into the city to defend them when the little darlings got arrested. I asked my "little one" what I would have done had she been there. Her doeful eyes and head sadly shook back and forth and she said "I wouldn't be alive now!" Overstatement, yes. But it was an acknowledgement that the police would have had to have taken a second place to what I would have done! As a single mom!

I thought pretty much the same thing, but the teachers probably aren't even allowed to touch children.

Can you imagine the lawsuits after the kid shows her lawyer bruised wrists from being restrained!

Sure. Ideally, the teacher should be able to restrain the child and give her a good spanking. But we both know that is no longer permitted, and if done, the teacher would be opening herself and the school system up for lawsuits.

Since teachers can't do that kind of thing any more, then it's up to the cops to restrain a kid who is out of control like this.

In today's society, a teacher would be taking his/her life into their hands to even grab this girl by the arm,
One of our teachers was in the cafeteria when two girls started to fight. She stepped in between them [a dangerous thing to do] and then grabbed one by the arm. The girl was trying to wrest her arm free, but the teacher wouldn't let go. By the time it was all over, the girl had some marks [bruises, I think] from the teacher holding her arm to keep her from fighting more. The parents were going to sue the teacher because of the marks. I don't know what kept them from suing. Consequently, teachers will do anything to stop a fight but reach in and grab a kid. It's no wonder the little girl in this article was allowed to rampage. The school would be sued for laying hands on her. So, they call the police.

One would like to think that the district's kindergarten teachers were trained to calm tantrum-throwing 5-year-olds.

I don't think that's the kind of thing they teach prospective teachers in the college of education... I think it leans more toward recognizing gender bias, the importance of shaping young minds, and how to celebrate diversity...

And if she hurts herself while someone is trying restrain her?
And why should a teacher risk his 'nads trying to restrain the brat?
Better to just call the police. Saves you liabilities and a probable kick to the crotch.

(Actually I'd start with the parent. Bet she doesn't have two; or at least not two leaving together.)

She needs a cuffing (not hand cuffs) and whipping. But its child about to do these sorta things nowadays...
