One recent Tuesday night at New York's Bowery Ballroom, the Crimea had just finished its second song. The Welsh quintet's first song had gone over fairly well, the second less so, and singer/guitarist Davey MacManus looked out at the still-gathering crowd.
Then, from somewhere in the darkness came the cry, "Freebird!"
It made this night like so many other rock 'n' roll nights in America.....

Man, I'm out of touch.
I thought rock fans were supposed
to yell, "Whipping Post!"
Coulda sworn Bugmenot had a login for WSJ... guess not. Shoulda checked before I pinged. I'll ping again with a login if I can locate one.
Well, it was a hit in the movie "Con Air," leading the nutty Graham Green character to say, "Define Irony? A bunch of a-holes on an airplane singing a song by a band that died in a plane crash."
I have been listening to a greatest hits almost every weekend.....just can't get enough of ooh that smell, and 38 special.
Nope. Must be a later incarnation. Our band was 1974-1976.
I realized after the fact that the description was '80s rock band.
I have a hotmail account specifically for spam. It is the one I use whenever I sing up for anything...
HAH! I'm gonna have to get out my Zappa for his Whipping Post shtick.
If y'all are interested in avoiding spam, I suggest taking a look at the following site: www.spamgourmet.com.
It works great.
'Freebird'? I dont' get it. Can someone explain?
And as for ' Styx'- the talent in that band was Tommy Shaw.
What a voice! Even his solo stuff was good! Then he went on to work with Ted Nugent in 'Damn Yankees' and did ' High Enough', one of the best anthem songs ever, IMO.
Except that Dennis DeYoung wrote most of the hits.
The year I graduated from high school...it was cool for the next few years to embroider "Freebird" patches and such for one's jeans...
If I leave here tomorrow
Would you still remember me?
For I must be travelling on, now,
'Cause there's too many places I've got to see.
But, if I stayed here with you, girl,
Things just couldn't be the same.
'Cause I'm as free as a bird now,
And this bird you can not change.
Lord knows, I can't change.
Bye, bye, its been a sweet love.
Though this feeling I can't change.
But please don't take it badly,
'Cause Lord knows I'm to blame.
But, if I stayed here with you girl,
Things just couldn't be the same.
Cause I'm as free as a bird now,
And this bird you'll never change.
And this bird you can not change.
Lord knows, I can't change.
Lord help me, I can't change.

"What song is it you wanna hear"?
No luck - still looking for registration.
Thanks for the reply. I still haven't been able to find the article, but will keep looking. You must really be a fan because you actually know how to spell "Skynyrd." :-)
It is on the album entitled "Dash Rip Rock's Gold Record."
The band is Dash Rip Rock.
You may remember their monster smash hit "Let's Go Smoke Some Pot." It was a re-make of "At the Hop" with lyrics gently poking fun of hippie "jam bands."
DRR's Gold Record has "...Pot" as the last cut. It is a twelve minute long cut. "...Pot" lasts about four minutes, then there's about seven minutes of silence, then they bust out "Stairway to Freebird." It rocks!
It only lasts a minute or so (like Bill said in the article.) Have your lighter ready.
