CHICAGO - Opponents of University of Illinois mascot Chief Illiniwek sued the school's trustees Tuesday, claiming the buckskin-clad figure perpetuates a racial stereotype.
In its lawsuit, the Illinois Native American Bar Association and two individuals seek to force the school to stop using the Chief as its sports mascot.
"The use of this mascot is outrageous. It's been going on way too long and it should come to an end," said Kim Edward Cook, association president.
The Chief is a 78-year-old tradition in which a student dresses in buckskins and headdress and dances at sports events.

Is this a state court lawsuit or a federal court lawsuit?
Native-Americans need to get a life.
Let's see, they want the caricature Ole Miss Colonel gone because it HONORS southern white guys to be a mascot BUT they want the Illini off as a mascot because it dishonors the to be a mascot. Same thing, two different interpretations based on what they want it to be. Political correctness is not requried to be internally consistent or intellectually honest.

So, what, did this Chief Illwicket walk around in a business suit or something?? Or cut-offs and a polo shirt? Tux? Adidas jogging outfit? Lab coat and gogles? Wife-beater and jockeys? Maybe they should dress him in each of these outfits on a rotating basis to appease the libs.
What a nonsensical reduction! Are we to understand that Arafat should have felt insulted that the Nobel Peace Prize committee would try reduce his decades of efforts toward peace (barf!) to a day's worth of ceremonies and activities in Sweden? No, rightly felt that he was being honored in a way that extremely favorably highlighted his goodness while overlooking his "peccadilloes."
No one is reducing native American heritage by letting Chief Illiniwek represent what has been good about Illinois for many hundreds of years. It is certainly far more likely to reduce appreciation of native American heritage among Illinoisans by getting rid of the Chief than letting these lathered, lawyered-up liberal activists deep-six the mascot. If that happens, many will likely think all that's been good about the Chief was frittered away and extinguished by a few distant, native American progeny who couldn't appreciate the honor the U of I has been bestowing on native American heritage for generations.
It's kind of like the stereotypical native American who is so down on his circumstances that he further damages his own health, well-being and future by spending all his welfare money at the local tavern, only to come out cursing his heritage and blaming "the white man."
Were it not for the liberal coalition giving support to these Ward Churchill types, their cause's supporters could be assessed in the single-digit percentages of the population. Talk about the tyranny of the minority!
