John Kerry and the Sub-Media Culture (says news arbitrator needed)

John Kerry and the Sub-Media Culture
by Russell Betts (March 16, 2005)

We don't have any illusions that Senator John Kerry was talking specifically about us or that he is even aware of these pages. We are just a small part in a much larger group of new news outlets that John Kerry has just labeled a sub-media culture, a sub culture he does not find to his liking and that he says needs to be controlled.

Speaking at an event at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library in Boston. last February, Kerry complained about us and the thousands of others in internet news. What he said is shocking only if you believe Kerry words could ever put this new information age back in the bottle.

"We learned," Kerry said to the gathering, "that the mainstream media, over the course of the last year, did a pretty good job of discerning. But there's a subculture and a sub-media that talks and keeps things going for entertainment purposes rather than for the flow of information. And that has a profound impact and undermines what we call the mainstream media of the country. And so the decision-making ability of the American electorate has been profoundly impacted as a consequence of that. The question is, what are we going to do about it?"

What Senator Kerry would like to do about it is to shut us all up. But he can't say that publicly. What he did say publicly, though, is just as shocking. "When fear is dominating the discussion and when there are false choices presented and there is no arbitrator, we have a problem," said Kerry.

In case you missed that, Kerry says the problem is the lack of an arbitrator to control the dissemination of news. He did not say who or what that arbitrator should be, only that we have a problem because there is not one.

The "sub-media" is a problem for Kerry because the mainstream media is no longer in control to silence groups like the Swift Boat Vets by ignoring them and denying them coverage. Or to keep stories quiet like we chronicled about Kerry's lead in outsourcing trade missions to China in the late 1990's in conjunction with a Boston company boasting over 70 outsourcing projects - at the same time we were reporting on this, his preferred news disseminators were dutifully printing Kerry's campaign speeches calling for an end to outsourcing without a word of Kerry's involvement in the very thing he was speaking against.

Surely the problem Kerry sees is that stories run by Dan Rather, The New York Times and the other media giants favorable to him are being knocked down as false by internet newsgroups calling themselves FreeRepublic, Powerline, and Little Green Footballs.

The problem for Kerry is that he could not count on the mainstream media as the only information gatekeeper in his bid to take the presidency. A recent study that showed the mainstream news coverage was much harder on Bush is no doubt the reason why Kerry sees it as a problem that the mainstream media is no longer the only game in town, one that for the most part is a game in his favor.

What is sub-culture to Kerry are the internet news outlets that report what the mainstream media will not and expose what the mainstream media fabricates. It is you by the millions that increasingly rely on internet news for at least a part of the news you take in. Kerry does not like this new sub-culture. He does not like you having access to it. Says Kerry, "It is a problem," a problem in need of an arbitrator, an arbitrator "to protect the decision-making ability of the American electorate."

It's a problem to Kerry that the only arbitrator is now you.

"We're not pajama people anymore, now we are sub-media."

But can we still eat subs sitting at our computers in our pajamas? That's the important question, LOL!

Sour grapes soon to turn to "whine" by Kerry nad the DimoWits. I am SO glad we dodged the double bullets of him and Teh-RA-zah. *SHIVER*

Speaking of subs, I'm going to fix me one right now.

Democrats should have outlawed voting while they had the chance.

Too late now.

I believe it was Kruschev who said "We will bury you" and "we will take your country without firing a shot".

Kerry is living proof that they are still trying.

Although I agree with your sentiment, what about Mc'Drools Campaign Finance Reform?

"It can't happen here" is a fools dream.

I think that is what happens when these guys are so fixated on becoming president their entire lives. Only I don't think Kerry has gone as far off the deep end as Gore did. Not yet at least.

In World War II the Germans had an arbitrator of the news. His name was Goebbels. Perhaps this is the type of media Mr. Kerry yearns for??

Heh JF Kerry - a man who took an oath, I believe to uphold the constitution - which part of the below don't you understand?

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; >or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

Future 9th circuit interpritation of the 1st amendment.

"The original intent of the founders was to provide full political speech for professional journalists. Citizens who engage in recreational political speech are protected by access to professional journalists and thus the government has a reasonable interest in limiting recreational political speech in favore of professional political speech.

In looking to resources outside the US constitution such as the EU constitution. We see that the trend of governing bodies around the world have included such limitations on individual speech in favor of the collective right of society to promote professional journalism. The United States must take note of such international precidents in order to harmonize US law with the global society.

Permitting individual free speech on the internet, particularly unfettered individual comentary and reaction to professional journalist articles is tantamount to yelling fire in a crowded theater. Such instantaneous critique of political articles is contrary to the vision of the foundes who would have only been able to envision response times of days if not weeks. There is no fundamental right to instant free speech without appropriant contemplation or editorial review.

Citizens have always had the leters to the editor to respond and broadcast media have taken up the tradition via reading letters to them at the end of their broadcasts. Society has an interest in having those letters pass through a professional review process. It levels the review field of amanature journalists by providing them access to the editorial review process.

Therefore we find that the internet forums and blogs which are maintained by and permit posting by non-professional journalists do no have a first amendment right as envisioned by the founding fathers."

Just a thought...

Rush was just talking about this today. Played the quotes of Kerry. Rush had a good take on the "sub-media". Kerry in a swift boat taken down by shots fired from under the water by a sub. Ok, sounded funnier when he said it.

Kerry has to run for his senate seat again in '06. Sounds as if he's already worried.

Can we help with a little push?
Point, John Kerry did not and will not have the leadership skills to be POTUS proven by his blaming everyone else for HIS failures.
