ANWR won't make a huge dent in domestic supply. What it will do is open other fields to exploration and drilling, and that WILL help supply in the long term.

The dirty little secret about no new refineries is, the owners of existing refineries have made damned sure no new ones get built.

probably more symbolic than anything. From what I've read ANWR won't bring much help to the shortfalls, especially in the short term.

Stupid? I'll tell you stupid - stupid is to hold a whole nation hostage over a few caribou. That is stupid.

Please rationalize the worth of giving a whole reserve to caribou while we have people on welfare in the U.S. who, of course, can not pay higher gasoline bills.

A little common sense in government would be very helpful to taxpayers.

I worked in the North Slope oil fields for 26 years. During that time several exploratory wells were drilled from the village of Kaktovik off shore from ANWR. There is at least as much oil there as was at Prudhoe Bay, perhaps more. Of course, the environazis will not believe this even after it is proven out because it is against their religion.

"Studies of the ANWR coastal plain indicate it may contain between 6 and 16 billion barrels of recoverable oil (between 11.6 and 31.5 billion barrels in-place). With enhanced recovery technology, ANWR oil could provide an additional 30 to 50 years of reliable supply. Natural gas, produced with the oil, could be reinjected or added to a new gas pipeline originating in Prudhoe Bay.

Petroleum development at Prudhoe Bay has not negatively affected wildlife. For instance, the Central Arctic caribou herd is at home with pipeline facilities and has grown from 3,000 to as high as 27,100 in the last 20 years. Drilling activity in ANWR would be limited to winter months when wildlife does not frequent the coastal plain.

Constantly improving technology has greatly reduced the footprint of Arctic oil development. If Prudhoe Bay were built today, facility designs show the footprint would be 64% smaller."

at its projected peak output in 2070 ANWR would produce less than 2 percent of our needs, so it's symbollic...or shortsighted.

There's still plenty of crude under California but good luck getting a permit to drill for it.

"Perhaps, but I wouldn't have a problem if the environmentalist whacko's had won... Seems a little F'n stupid to me over a 6 month supply of oil."

What is fact and fiction here? First I hear that we're talking about six months worth of oil.. then I hear that these are large reserves.

....Why do we want to drill in ANWR?.....

A better question - why would we not want to drill in ANWAR?

The caribou? The pristine area untouched that no one ever will visit to see?

I'd like to see a Wal*Mart built up there in ANWR, just to really tick them off.
