Oil firms do not work that way. They are street smart, hard and will do whatever to be profitable. Which is why I will maintain stock in Exxon/Mobil. If they are losing money, they will find a way to make a profit. You don't have to worry with those guys running a company - they are tough as nails.

Well, that is jus the way it is ... The Feds own most of Alaska, and have since we bought it from the Russians in 1865 ... ANWR has been dedicated wildlife refuge land for decades.

We could sell ANWR, but it is useless tundra useful only for caribou and oil drilling.

The eco-extremists wanted it to remain economically useless tundra ... now, it can be used for oil drilling AND remain a wildlife refuge ... WIN/WIN.

Well done, I predict Alaska will have a few decades of prosperity thanks to this.

Your dates and numbers are way off...

do the math: ANWR hold 15 billion recoverable barrels, $50/barrel at today's prices.

That is $750 BILLION worth of oil.

It is very possible that the bulk of the price run up over $35-40 bbl is due to speculators and the "terror" factor. I don't know the % breakdown in the numbers but if I were to hazard a guess I would say 40% terror premium, approximately $8-9bbl and the balance speculative fever.

As quickly as the bubble inflated it could go bust. The commodities market is not immune to severe corrections any more then the stock market, the housing market or any other market place.

That's the eco-freaks way of trying to discount the amount of oil. They are using a low-ball estimate, then state it in a way that sounds marginal - what do they mean 'six months worth of oil' when it will be drilled over 20 to 30 year timeframe, and be a fraction of our total oil usage.

The actual estimate to go by is about 15 billion barrels, or $750 billion worth of oil at current $50/barrel price. Putting a $ number on it IMHO helps explain the real value of drilling in ANWR.
