More Engaged Men Are Setting Up Divorce Nest Eggs
The Hoosier Gazette ^ | March 16, 2005 | August Wayne

The high percentage of marriages that end in divorce has created a new trend; many men are planning financially for their divorce before they even get married.

A recent survey conducted by the Indiana Family Institute (IFI) found that 79% of men who are engaged to be married worry that their marriage will end in divorce and they will be ruined financially. As a result, more than half of these men admitted to setting up secret nest eggs in case their fears become reality.

“Some people believe this is the height of pessimism, but to me it makes perfect sense,” says Dr. Phillip Haus, director of the study, “Many of these men are professionals who have worked hard for their success and don’t want to start from scratch if the woman they marry turns out to be a total witch to live with.”

Haus says the most common way engaged men plan for the worst is by setting up a savings account in the name of a relative they trust who has had a long, sound marriage so their funds will be safe. This way once the joint assets are divided after a divorce, they will have a little something extra to fall back on.

“Let’s face it,” added Haus, “The man is the one who almost always get screwed over when a divorce occurs. Even though he usually made more money than the woman in the marriage, he loses the house, and ends up paying child support since the woman will get custody of their offspring. This new trend just provides him with a little insurance so he can enjoy a decent standard of living.”

Some men go to even greater lengths to secure their futures. “We had a few cases where engaged men told us they gave a good portion of their belongings to friends or relatives for safe keeping. One man admitted buying a house in his gay cousin’s name so he would have a place to live if things didn’t work out. This shows the sad state of relationships and the impact of divorce in this country.”

Haus believes the trend of setting up divorce nest eggs will continue. “As long as there is divorce, there will be people trying to beat the system.”

"JUST SAY NO TO MARRIAGE!"

Some couples should just have an affair.
Some couples should live with each other.
Some couples should marry each other.
I think the divorce rate would drop like a stone if couples stayed in their proper catagory :)

Instead of spending all that physical and mental energy on getting ready in casae of a divorce, why not spend some time studying WHY that trusted family member has a stable marriage, and do what they are doing!! Then there will be no need for the nest egg.

No such thing as true love in a community property state...

My sister married a Iranian man. They separated. A little later, she discovered he went out and bought a house. The courts backed him up and said she had no claim to that house. They were still married at the time. He left her penniless and homeless.

So he got the house and the green card! Isn't America wonderful...after seperation if he used seperate funds, why would she have a claim to it?

It was with joint funds, and the courts didn't care they turn a blind eye in these cases.

His parents got their green cards and citizenship too. Oh, and Social Security payments with their Iranian work record.

Isn't America generous with their soon to be defunct Social Security system?

Perhaps you can explain what it is about the Louisana system you just decribed that made it "best"? Sounds like a raw deal to me. I don't see anything good about it.

Separation agreements usually contain a "free trader" clause, where either party can purchase real estate or consumer goods independent of claim from the other party in the final settlement.

A cash down payment using marital assets to get a loan to buy the property was probably only 5%, which the wife would only be entitled to 1/2 of that. If the down payment could be proved to be acquired by savings after the separation, then the wife has no claim, IMO.

So you can't bond for life without government involvement? Why not just a religious ceremony?

What happens when your financial partner, et al, decides to seek greener pastures? That's where big government steps in to your life. Depending on the presence of a Y-chromosome, that's a very good thing or a very bad thing.

It only makes sense to keep your assets separate and safe prior to signing a marriage contract. Men (and women) are doing this because it is a realization that emotional devastation notwithstanding, divorce can leave you financially destitute. The very government, which approves the marriage contract, is the one who can, with the stroke of a pen, destroy someone's life simply because one individual decided he/she wants something else.

Civil involvement in marriage must go.

I do believe the law is involved in these matters for good reason. How would you settle disputes and the custody of children. And the division of property?

Are you suggesting we revert to the law of the jungle where the biggest person gets it all?

And I like my children legitimate, under the law if you will.

I don't think marriage would work for you.

Of course not. We have laws to settle disputes over assets outside of marriage, do we not? I said that marriage should be a non-civil union. I think government has created a no fault, winner-take-all mockery of it, which denies certain people their right to equal protection under the law.

You can't blame men and women for wanting to protect themselves from all the things you mentioned, can you? And as I said, outside of raising children, I don't see any reason for civil marriage given the laws in place today. And I'm far, far from alone.

And I like my children legitimate, under the law if you will.

So do I.

I don't think marriage would work for you.

Read my home page. I'm glad it has worked for you.

If you are thinking about divorce before you get married, then you probably shouldn't get married.

As you are 18, I'll forgive your ignorance. At the age of 41 (first marriage at 28) I know people change. But men should plan for divorce. Because the courts kill them, especially if there are children involved. I know.
