CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Embattled Harvard President Lawrence Summers braced for another contentious faculty meeting Tuesday, with debate planned on two motions -- one a vote of no-confidence, the other a milder rebuke for his management style and comments about women in science. Neither item would carry any official weight.

recently the nyt told us that summers was a bad president at harvard because his antipathy for cornel west resulted in the latter's flight from harvard to princeton.

recently at the library, i came across brother west's "democracy matters; winning the fight against imperialism", penguin press, ny, 2004.

imo, harvard's lucky they got rid of west.

this "intellectual" book is written in the "see dick and jane run" style.

for example, he makes many allusions to great literature, such as plato, but you really wonder if he's read those books or read a summary such as monarch notes.

his biggie is calling right wing christians "constantinian" christians. here are some excerpts:

concerning walter rauchenbusch's book "christianity and the social crisis" of 1907, brother west says:

"as the industrial engines of the american empire ramped up, leading to the excesses of the gilded age, this theological movement perceived that industrial capitalism and its attendant urbanization brought with them inherent social injustices." (p.153)

"just as demagogic and antidemocratic fundamentalisms have gained too much prominence in both israel and the islamic world, so too has a fundamentalist strain of christianity gained far too much power in our political system, and in the hearts and minds of citizens." (p. 146)

in brother west's opinion (p. 148), the emperor constantine corrupted christianity, creating an imperial authoritarianism which we've been battling ever since.

brother west calls this (p. 149) "constantinian christians". they "preach hatred", are anti-abortion and homophobic.

meanwhile, american christians are unaware of the imperialistic identity of their faith (p. 150).

"prophetic" christians are the opposite of the evil constaninians above.

by "democracy" he means, of course, communism.

Cornell West was the Commmencement speaker at my college graduation about 12 years and he was embarassing. Basically, calling all the white parents in the crowd a bunch of racists and imploring their kids to "rebel." My dad wanted to punch his lights out.

Of course, I'm sure he's now revered during "Black History Month."

I think Larry Summers should fire anyone that votes no confidence. It would be a reighteous weeding.

Communists, nihilists and academic cowards. Why did I ever aspire to have my children attend the elite shcools?

The possible payoff in prestige and salary is vastly outweighed by the potential of pollution from these miserable people.

My kids will stay close to home.

I guess "Professor" West hasn't heard of the Reformation and Counter-Reformation. Must not be taught in "ethnic studies."

IMHO West is every bit as bad as Ward Churchill - which is why Princeton snapped him up and Summers is in hot water with the academic far lefties.

interesting, isn't it, how these people make money at being the opposite of the values that we supposedly hold high?

In a perverse way, I admire this genre. They know exactly how to use their radical chic act and liberal guilt about all things ethnic to play academic liberals like a Stradivarius to get lifetime tenure in a cush job doing little but spout off attacks on the establishment despite little talent and few qualifications. And the liberals don't even realize they're being played for suckers.

...and a draft pick to be named later?

I'd rather be ruled by the first hundred names in the Cambridge phone book than by the faculty of Harvard University.
