~ FReeper Canteen Survival Guide ~ |
New to the Canteen? Need some tips on how to figure things out around here? 1. If you support our Troops, Veterans, and their families, WELCOME HOME!! This is the place to be at FRee Republic. (We would point out that many of the other daily threads also honor our Troops, Veterans, and their families.) If you need help with the following, please check these folks out: Graphics --> If you want to learn how to post graphics, please ask anyone in the Canteen. Just FReepmail or post your request on the thread. Someone will help you. Music --> If you want to learn how to post music, please ask any of the Canteen Deejays for help. (Kathy In Alaskak, uncleshag, Diva Betsy Ross, StarCMC, AZAmericonnie, beachn4fun, Bethbg79, laurenmarlowe, acad1228, tomkow6, or MoJo2001.) Canteen CEO: 68-69TonkinGulfYachtClub (Don't bother him unless you have complaints, grievances, in need of money, or you're tremendously bored.) Birthday Diva: Got a birthday or anniversary? Please contact AZAmericonnie via FReepmail. Daily Canteen Threads Monday --> StarCMC Tuesday --> LaDivaLoca (Diva Betsy Ross has been doing a fabulous job filling in!) Wednesday --> Spotsy Thursday ---> bentfeather Friday ---> tomkow6 Saturday --> Canteen Deejays Sunday --> Military Guest Chaplain If you have any thread ideas or suggestions, please FReepmail MoJo2001 with any ideas. Canteen Lingo Divas --> Any female that comes into the Canteen is referred to as a "Diva". We've taken the word back from those Hollywood snobs. Burka Man or Burka Boy --> this refers to tomkow6. He will usually try to sell you a Burka. Do us all a favor and refuse! Thank you. Canteen Galz --> Well, this is the term for all the Galz in the Canteen. Canteen Guyz --> This is the term for all the Guyz in the Canteen. Ma --> this is a reference to Kathy In Alaska. We all call her "Ma". Fret not, she likes it. Most of the time. Hehe! We'll add more later! Quirky Canteen Traditions & Other Stuff 1. The threads are posted every night around 11PM EST. After they are posted, someone usually tries to rush in to get the #1 post after the thread poster. No! You don't win a prize or a vacation. We're sorry if that's the impression you got. However, you get the satisfaction of being NUMERO UNO for that day's thread. 2. Hitting the numbers. Some Canteeners (actually most) like to see who lands on the "numbers". These numbers are 50, 100, 150, 200, 250, and so on. You will then get a WooHoo for landing on the numbers. If you hit 3 in a row, you'll get a hat trick. 3. If you hit 666, you must post upside! (You don't have to, but it's tradition!) 4. bentfeather is referred to as "Queenie". She was so coronated in the Canteen. She's also the Canteen Poet and you can visit her daily Poetry Thread at the Dragon Flies Lair here at FR. 5. HiJinx's granddaughter is known as the "Canteen Princess" or "Cupcake Commando". Her name is Piper. If you see references to that, you'll now know who we are talking about. 6. beachn4fun is known as the Canteen Flirt. Watch out!! Hehe! 7. If misery loves company, then obnoxious behavior does as well. If you want to be extremely bad and obnoxious, please avoid tomkow6! 8. Whatever you do, please do not post anything negative about our military, Veterans, or their families. If you have issues or complaints with government policies in this country, take to it the regular FR forum. That drama isn't for here. 9. Please help us keep the Canteen politically free. Our Troops don't need to hear the latest political drama. They've got enough to worry about. 10. Please do not flame anyone in the Canteen. We're all here to entertain and amuse our Troops. This isn't about us. It's about them! 11. For the most part, you won't offend many of the regular Canteeners. We're a happy, dysfunctional group of friends. Be yourself, relax, and have fun. That's all we ask. Just don't forget who our audience is out there: Our Troops!! 12. If you aren't sure about something, ask!! We've all been new to the Canteen (except Ma and Mr.Tonkin...we just found them under the Canteen rock) and it can be overwhelming sometimes. Don't hesitate to ask any of us. We want you to all feel at home in the Canteen.
We'll add more later!! Thank you!!

Give me liberty or give me Beth!
We shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender.

The Carnegie Foundation discovered that to be successful on the job, relational skills are far more important than knowledge. Its research found that only 15 percent of a person's success is determined by job knowledge and technical skills. Eighty-five percent is determined by an individual's attitude and ability to relate to other people.
Scripture commands us to "be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you" (Ephesians 4:32). In fact, it tells us to love our "neighbor" as we love ourselves (Matthew 22:39). And a neighbor is not only someone who lives near us or works next to us, but anyone we meet on life's journeyespecially those in need.
So having an attitude of courtesy, care, and concern for others is a basic spiritual principle. It is also the most important guideline for congenial and happy relationships. Indeed, it is even the golden key to vocational success.
Our purpose for modeling a Christlike spirit of neighborly love, though, is that we want to obey God, not just to achieve success at work. After all, our supreme vocation as believers is to embody and practice the neighbor-loving character of our Lord. Vernon Grounds
Those who love God will love their neighbor.
Thank You for today's thread!

"This is a Christian nation" -- Harry S. Truman, letter to Pope Pius XII, 1947"Our laws and our institutions must necessarily be based upon and embody the teachings of the redeemer of mankind. It is impossible that it should be otherwise; and in this sense and to this extent our civilization and our institutions are emphatically Christian." -- Justice Josiah Brewer, US Supreme Court Feb 29 1892, 143 US 457-458
"...in Updegraph v. The Commonwealth, it was decided that, Christianity, general Christianity,is, and always has been, a part of the common law...not Christianity with the established church...but Christianity with liberty of consience to all men." -- Justice David Brewer, US Supreme Court, 1892, church of the Holy Trinity v. United States; (143 US 457-458, 465-471, 36 L ed 226)
"These fundamental objects of the Constitution are in perfect harmony with the revealed objects of the Christian religion. Union, justice, peace, the general welfare, and the blessings of civil and religious liberty, are the objects of Christianity, and always secured under its practical and beneficent reign.
The state must rest upon the basis of religion, and it must preserve this basis, or itself must fall. But the support which religion gives to the state will obviously cease the moment religion loses its hold upon the popular mind.
This is a Christian nation, first in name, and secondly because of the many and mighty elements of a pure Christianity which have given it character and shaped its destiny from the beginning. It is preeminently the land of the Bible, of the Christian Church, and of the Christiani Sabbath... The chief security and glory of the United states of America has been, is now and will forever be, the prevalence and domination of the Christian Faith." -- Benjamin Franklin Morris, 1864, notable American historian.
"America was born a Christian nation. America was born to exemplify that devotion to the elements of righteousness which are derived from the revelations of Holy Scripture." - - President Woodrow Wilson , 1913
Diva! This is one cool thread! It's gonna take me hours to go through it all!!! :)
