And they don't reflect the views of a lot of conservatives either.
I'm sorry you feel that way. I guess it's ok to have freedoms as long as they are yours, and to hell with everyone else.
And we call our lawmakers RINO'S. Now I know where that came from.
Pity, Enterprise.
I bet you are under 30!
Liberalism and Liberislam are diseases. We have to heal the sickest among us 1st. We "true conservatives" can wait.
I have met avid conservatives with a big blind spot somewhere. It ususally has to do with their upbringing. (When I was young, the government welfare kept us alive) or some such thing.
The biggist one I see is conservatives who belive the government should protect their industries against foreign competition. (Everywhere else the government should get out of people's lives, but in this case, where their job is at stake, the government state is just fine.)
Free health care for everyone is hardly a conservative position. Government-imposed smoking bans for restaurants aren't either. In fact, most of the points raised are, I think, exactly opposite to what most conservatives believe. If they're not, I've been erroneously describing myself as conservative for a long, long time.
* "I'm a conservative...except when it comes to health care. Health care is a "right" and the government should make sure everyone gets it. For free."
* "I'm a conservative...except when it comes to gun rights. It's OK for the government to require that people get gun licenses and ban the sale of guns at gun shows. Otherwise, a 'bad' guy might get one."
My view is that things like this are not ok. My point is that he has constructed straw man characterizations to represent a perceived hypocrisy of conservatives. And I strongly disagree with those characterizations. They are NOT the views of conservatives in general.
Ping on your love of lists.
:D
I'm from Kaleefornia. I'm long past 30!
What makes you say that?
The government should have stayed out of forced smoking bans on private businesses. This should have been left up to the business owner and his patrons.
So, Chuck says....
I like my politicians to vote like real conservatives EXCEPT that I can understand their vacillations on issues..
I personally used to be a conservative till the party as a whole moved so far left it made me a radical.. I didn't change any positions, I just woke up one day and BLAM!.. I wasn't conservative any more.. Conservatives are leftists..
I'm for RADICAL CHANGES in Washington D.C. and theres nothing conservative about that.. Conservatives seem to want a democracy, I want the old tried and true republic.. Democrats want a democracy too, thats why they are called democrats..
He is saying that many of us are Conservative except:
"I'm a conservative...except when it comes to tobacco. Government shouldn't raise taxes, except on cigarettes and smokeless tobacco. That's OK."
"I'm a conservative...except when it comes to McDonalds and Burger King. The government should stop them from advertising during kids' shows."
"I'm a conservative...except when it comes to Budweiser and Coors commercials during college football and basketball games. The government should ban those ads."
"I'm a conservative...except when it comes to home-schoolers. Those people should have to report to the government."
We as Conservatives do NOT want Government interceptions. We do NOT want to stop Mcdonalds and Burger King ads. We do NOT want to ban Bud and Coors ads. We do NOT want home schooling to have to report to the government.
See what I mean? Chuck is just saying that a lot of people 'claim' to be Conservative EXCEPT when it comes to certain things.
True, the above positions are often espoused by self-described "conservatives."
They swarm on any thread related to smoking/private property issues.
I don't believe he was trying to say all these points are the veiews of most people who call themselves conservatives. I think he was saying that there are a number of concervatives who have one or two of these issues they are weak on for one reason or another.
I think that there has to be a distinction between *conservatives*(self-described) and *conservatism*, especially when it comes to politicians. It is extremely rare to find an ideologically *pure* person, politco or otherwise. Conservatism, at is usually described by conservative thinkers and pundits is usually very different from what many *conservative* politicians (Mostly Republican) actually vote.
I love that picture!!
