The official magnitude for this earthquake is indicated at the top of this page. This was the best available estimate of the earthquake's size, at the time that this page was created. Other magnitudes associated with web pages linked from here are those determined at various times following the earthquake with different types of seismic data. Although, given the data used, they are legitimate estimates of magnitude, they are not considered the official magnitude.

depth is called a hypocenter and for instance in Calif usually shallow like 15 miles or so.....in Alaska where the biggest quakes are, they are deeper.....you will feel a shallow quake more than a deep on given the same magnitude,, and deep ones are harder to measure.....though a deep one of significant magnitude would do severe damage as well......a 6.0 at that depth wouldn't be much in Calif but is still bad in Iran.....
Interesting Factoid: The amount of energy released during the recent Tsunami was 10,000 larger than the bomb dropped on Hiroshima.
very good.......most people have no idea of the relative power of nature........living in Calif, I kind of know what the power of an quake is and it would take most of the nukes on earth to approx one.......
That is really a wild pattern of earthquakes....
Heh.. I was off by 'a bit'. I knew I had the 'tens of thousdands' right.
Anyway... fixed up there now for accruacy (with link)

The 6.4-magnitude quake hit the Kerman province near the town of Zarand, about 740 kilometres southeast of Tehran, affecting an estimated 30,000 people.
Many survivors were left homeless, living in tents and surviving on food rations.
"The death toll is now 500, and there's a possibility that the figure will increase," Mohammad Javad Fadaei, deputy governor of Kerman province, told the Associated Press.
About 40 villages were damaged in the quake, located in a region about 200 kilometres northwest of the historic city of Bam, which was devastated by an earthquake in 2003.

Anyone else happen to think of TESLA here?
I know its crazy... but Iran really has had some strange luck lately.
What if...
Nice map. Thanks
Thanks, yall. Interesting, huh?

Yesla on the Tesla. Someone's aim is getting better, we didn't hit Turkey or Greece.
It's another new moon. Syzygy. The moon and sun are exerting gravitational force inline with the earth. More "tidal" deformation of the crust. Most big quakes occur +/- 1 day from an old or new moon.
From USGS, here's a map showing major tectonic boundaries in the area. Iran has numerous fault lines and a history of major earthquakes.
