Schiavo's case lands in Congress
St Petersburg Tines Tampa Bay ^ | 3.11.05 | ANITA KUMAR, Times Staff Writer

With avenues to keep Terri Schiavo alive closing in the state of Florida, they were opening in the nation's capital Thursday . The tide turned decidedly in favor of the parents who want to prolong their brain-damaged daughters life.

Just a scant eight days before the court ordered deadline to remove her feeding tube, Republicans on Capitol Hill rallied around the case that has become a 'cause celebre' of conservative and religious groups.

Florida Sen. Mel Martinez and Rep. Dave Weldon's bill to require the incapacitated without living wills to be appointed attorneys before life support is terminated, introduced on Tuesday had 103 sponsors in the House and seven sponsors in the Senate.

Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, a surgeon, is trying to get it to the Senate floor without it being heard in committte. House Majority Leader Tom Delay is working to get the bill in front of the Judiciary committee by Wednesday.

It was unclear whether US Congressional Democrats would try and stop the bill. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has said he prefers for it to be heard in committee.

Sam Brownback, a Kansas Republican, said he hopes for full Democratic support and has heard no direct oppositon.

George Felos, attorney for Michael Schiavo, sounded resigned to the fact that politics in the nations capital would delay the removal of Schiavo's feeding tube the way it did in 2003, when Florida's governor and legislature stepped in.

'It is certainly disheartening to see them falling all over themselves to pander to these groups,' Felos said. 'It's a massive campaign of fear and misinformation. It's a repeat of Terri's law'

The attorney for the Schiavo parents had the opposite view. 'We are very encouraged by what is happening in Congress right now, said David Gibbs.

'The family is profoundly grateful'

One more example. You're trying to be logical, yet would fail Logic 101 with your fallacies.
You're saying, A)Since "this", and B)Since "that", therefore that equals c) "thus."

You're saying A)since there are cars, and b)since there are elephants, C)therefore we should move to Jupiter.
Huh??? you ask. Exactly! It doesn't make sense! One has nothing to do with the other!
But your this and your that are in two distinct and non-blendable categories. A this is not a that. Nor is a that a this.

YOU say: " A)since Scripture encourages us to pray for each other, and b)since Saints are not dead, C) therefore it is perfectly OK to pray (in the sense of asking a favor) to Saints and they will intercede for us.

No!! Category "A" and Category "B" are not synonymous according to Scripture. Just because we pray for each other here, it does not follow that we therefore pray for departed Christians. AND most importantly, it does not mean that those departed Christians can, should, or will have any intercession for us.

Instead, Jesus taught us how to pray, and Who to pray to, and what prayer is.

When something seems like an answer to prayer, but that prayer has been prayed to a false god, or in contradiction to God's Word and prayed "to a saint," the reasons for the answer according to Scripture are:
1. The demonic workings, to try to convince you the false teaching is true;
2. Coincidence;
3. God in grace responding even though you were wrong;
4. And definitely not because of a departed believer in Christ.

"Calling it superstition is insulting to millions of Christians throughout the world."

Actually, it's very loving. Having people willing to tell you the truth, even though it hurts, even though it pricks our pride to realize we have been wrong, and to see how hard our heart really is to the things of God.

It is a superstition. How did it arise? When Scripture was removed as the Final Authority for where we are to go for spiritual truth. When a church decides that "this is what we believe, and you are to follow what we say," and if those beliefs such as praying to the saints are wrong, that church is teaching false doctrine. They don't want to give it up. They have placed their opinions on the same level as Scripture, saying "We believe in praying to Mary or Joseph."

It IS contrary to the Word of God, and it an insult to YOU that your leaders have thought so little of you as to teach you this, and to continue to teach it, unrepentant.

It is insane - and if not illegal, then it should be illegal - to have an estranged husband such as Michael (who might have put her in that condiction) be Terri's guardian. In Sunny von Bulow's case the children, not the husband, was given guardianship.

I misunderstood in thinking you were calling me a "swine". Thank you for clarifying your remarks. Again, I am not trying to denigrate you or other Catholics.

When God calls something "sin", that is what we should call it. When God calls people to repent (turn from sin and do the opposite), it is not because He doesn't like us, it is because He loves us.

But anyone who remains in their sins will be cut off from the Love of God when they die.

It almost always makes people angry when they are told they need to repent. Yet this is a message of love.

God has sent His messengers to warn people to flee from the coming wrath. God's wrath is stored up in heaven and will soon be poured out on the earth. Repentance from dead works is required - not optional - for us to hope to find mercy and escape the terrible things that are coming to the earth.

We all must put our trust entirely in Jesus. There is no other name given to mankind by which we can be saved. We cannot rely on our own goodness, or the goodness of others, or the goodness of the church.

Even though God operates today through what the Bible calls "church", that does not exclude even the church from the need to repent.

Revelation 3:17-22 - Because you say, "I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing"; and know not that you are wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked: I counsel you to buy from me gold tried in the fire, that you may be rich; and white clothing, that you may be clothed, and that the shame of your nakedness does not appear; and anoint your eyes with eye salve, that you may see. As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and REPENT. Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear My voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will dine with him, and he with Me. To him who overcomes will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with My Father in His throne. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit say to the churches.

If anyone does not turn away from idols, fornication, adultery, murder, hatred and bitterness, and things like these, and turn to God in the faith of Christ to serve Him, they will die in their sins. These are sins for which Jesus died. He rose again to give new life to those who believe on Him - to live apart from these things.

These are the two commands of God's message of salvation: repent and believe.

If you came to my door and started talking to me like that and wouldn't leave me be, I would call the police on you.

You are nothing but bible bullies. Maybe you would do better to look at your own faults rather than tear me apart for my little ones. Maybe you should write to the Vatican and all the catholic bishops if you think they are teaching so wrong.

But it is easier to pick on a sick, weak sheep and try to isolate it from the flock before you move in for the kill.

Getting mad over something that hasn't happened doesn't seem right, does it? Saying "if" this or "if" I "started talking to me like that." Like what? I'm not at your door. I'm writing in a forum in which its express purpose IS to be pro God, pro communication about values and truth. I will "leave you be" after this. I apologize for upsetting you.

I am going to suggest to you that it is NOT me who is "tearing you apart", but it is the instruction of the Holy Spirit, reproving you, urging you to conform yourself to His commands in the Word, such as praying to HIM rather than humans.

"little ones"--there's a "little" sin? How important is it for Terri that you be praying to the RIGHT source Who truly CAN answer? "Oh, but Terri, I'd rather pray to someone other than God, someone who can't help you, because I would rather hold onto my false beliefs than help you live."

You have diagnosed yourself correctly, a "sick, weak sheep." But I am not picking on you or going in for the kill. You are a sheep, one of the flock of Christ if you belive in Him. But your upbringing and teachers have taught you wrongly, and it makes you weak in your thinking and actions.

I had leaders who taught me wrongly, and had years of wasted falsities in my life. Wrong teaching does not give us the strength and health we need. Only right doctrine, used by the Holy Spirit, the Word of God applied to our lives to teach us. ( 2 Tim.3:16).

Rather than feel defensive, be open and feel how much He loves you as He continues to reach out and teach and guide you!

One more thing, please, because it is of even more importance than prayer.

You said "anyone who remains in their sins will be cut off from the Love of God when they die."

NO! Anyone who does not trust in the death of Jesus Christ for them when they die 'remains in their sins' and cuts themselves off from the love of God when they die.

Humans will always "remain in their sins" until they die, because we have a sin nature. Our salvation is NOT based on OUR sinlessness, but on CHRIST'S. We are NEVER cut off from the Love of God. "For God so loved the world..."

Jesus asks only one thing: "BELIEVE in Me, and you shall be saved." Only belief in Him accepts His forgiveness and grace and mercy. It is NOT our sins which "cut us off from" God's love as you would claim, but it is our unbelief in the One Who has atoned for those sins, and does not require us to add to His efficient work.

Prayer for Terri

Help our unbelief, O magificent and merciful Father. We look to Jesus' passion and death and resurrection as our only hope for victory over our evil sin. We receive afresh Your love and peace this day, and come to You confidently as Your loved children.

You promised that You hear and answer our prayers, and we bring Terri to You based on Your faithfulness. Work in every circumstance, every detail, every congressman, every lawyer fighting for life this week and following. Hinder the works of the Enemy on every front. What he intends for evil, You use for good in turning lives to repentance and Your cross.

Receive the glory and honor due You. Thank you for using us, for loving us. In Jesus' name, amen.

Interesting ... just HOW is the attorney supposed to know the wishes of his client ?

The Attorney doesn't have to "Know the wishes of his client". What the Attorney has to to is protect her rights under law.

Criminals get better treatment than what they are fixing to do to this woman.

Dogs get better treatment than what they are fixing to do to this woman.

Hell, even Rats get better treatment than what they are fixing to do to this woman.

well.. maybe not rats.

"If you came to my door and started talking to me like that and wouldn't leave me be, I would call the police on you."

But I did not. People come here to, among other things, discuss ideas.

Sharing my views on a public forum is not quite the same as trespassing on private property while trying to force someone to enter a discussion against their will.

"Maybe you should write to the Vatican and all the catholic bishops if you think they are teaching so wrong."

I do not go looking for someone to reprove. If they are interested in discussing these issues with me, I would be happy to. (Since I am not anyone important they might not be interested.)

"But it is easier to pick on a sick, weak sheep and try to isolate it from the flock before you move in for the kill."

I am not trying to pick on you. I do not want you to be cut off from the True Shepherd or His flock. I certainly have no desire to kill you.

If you feel weak, I implore you to call to God for help and strength. Ask Him for wisdom. Ask Him to reveal the truth to you. Read His word and meditate on it.

Proverbs 2:3-7 - Yes, if you cry after knowledge, and lift up your voice for understanding; If you seek her as silver, and search for her as for hid treasures; Then you shall understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God. For the LORD gives wisdom: out of His mouth comes knowledge and understanding. He lays up sound wisdom for the righteous: He is a buckler to them that walk uprightly.

James 1:5 - If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, Who gives to all men generously, and reproaches not; and it shall be given to him.

I am not trying to talk down to you either. This is something I must do frequently.

people, Terri DOES NOT EVEN HAVE AN ATTORNEY. HER CHEATING, LYING HUSBAND HAS THE ATTORNEY WHO IS TRYING TO KILL TERRI WITH HER REHAB MONEY.

I repeat... Terri has NEVER HAD HER OWN ATTORNEY. This is why the US Congress is stepping in so that she as an incapacitated person is afforded the right to attorney just like a CONVICT IN DEATH ROW IS AFFORDED THE RIGHT TO AN ATTORNEY.

Judge Greer didn't feel it was necessary for Terri to have an attorney to make it EASIER FOR HIM TO TRY TO MURDER HER FOR HER HUSBAND.

... can you ever imagine where a court appointed attorney for the victim would NOT challenge EVERY "right to die" case ?
Why cut off your own paycheck when your "client" can never disagree with you ?

If this were to become law, the government would be paying not only the maintanence, but the massive lawyer fees for EVERY body, no matter how many tubes were hooked up to them.

this is not a right to die case. your first premise is incorrect. if the convict has rights under the constitution so does Terri. Terri is not less of a person because she needs a wheelchair. It appears you think TErri is less of a person. YOU SHOULD BE A FLORIDA JUDGE. THEY HAVE NO QUALIFICATIONS EITHER.

IF THIS JUDGE DIDN'T HATE TERRI AND HER FAMILY SO MUCH, WE WOULDN'T BE HERE. HE HAS ALLOWED ALL THE GUARDIANSHIP LAWS TO BE BROKEN TO GET TO A POINT WHERE HE SEEKS TO MURDER THE WIFE FOR THE HUSBAND. MANY LAWS HAVE BEEN BROKEN. Michael Schiavo broke over 353 guardianship laws all by himself. They are also guilty of medicaid FRAUD and many other offenses. No wonder greer is hacking the empire journal. law enforcement reads it. They are catching on that Greer is a corrupt judge. Thanks TEJ.
