A senior Republican senator said, "The message coming out of the White House is that we'll fix Social Security by raising your taxes and cutting your retirement benefits and, to get something passed, we'll forget about the personal retirement accounts we promised."

You will be paying for those bonds in the future with taxes. It's not like the money is locked away in a swiss bank acount. (some of it might be in John McCains secret bank accounts... )
NO! What we need to do is get as much money as possible out of DC, so the politicians can't spend it....
Ahem back at ya.......you mean of John McCain or a Dem said the same thing it would be OK with you because it is "just playing politics".....they would be eaten alive at least at FR.....many people here villify one act but poo poo the same act if their fav Repub does it......don't get me wrong..I've always been a Repub but I hate the hypocrisy at times.......
it always comes down to the same thing - the white house communications team stinks. Bush is putting it on the line, but there is no simple message crafted for him. Hell, I don't even know what the plan is - and unless the details are spelled out exactly, it allows republicans like Lindsey Graham er al to toss their ideas for tax increases onto the pile, and instead of a concise clear message, its a confusing mess and people tune out.
it should be but it won't.....too many ignorant and scared people out there......once you start a program you almost can never get rid of it.........best thing to do is try and move towards some personal accounts.......and you are right about people thinking SS is gonna save them and more so they just don't think about it......it is the fast living lifestyle of many Americans.......
The liberals in the media are doing it on purpose to make it seem like the message is unclear. I understand completely what the plan is about and I'm not buying the media spin. The media is setting up some pols for a big fall with the push polls because most people are paying attention to what's going on. Don't believe the hype.
I want the name of this "Senior Republican Senator"...because he or she is crying out for medication.
This quote is the complete opposite...almost word for word....of everything the President has said.
This is spin bordering on the criminally insane.
not once have I heard Bush liken the plan to 401Ks - which are very popular, and which people understand. There have to be details - the investment options available, how much of a reduction in future SS benefits am I going to commit to as a swap to use some of my tax $$$s for my personal account, etc. Some charts showing rates of return and savings over a lifetime, how much will be in a person's account when they reach 65 years of age, etc. If Bush doesn't want to be the pitch man, hire an ad agency and run a media campaign with these kinds of details.
Right...there was no earthly reason for the gullible geezers to think the gravy train was going to keep going for their 30 years of retirement on the meager contributions they put in. And to buy their votes while spending their retirement money, Congress would sweeten the pot still further with COLA raises over the years. The average retiree has used up all the money he put in, plus interest, in less than 5 years of drawing payments. The young worker bees kick in the rest of the 20 years they continue to live. That's way too expensive. Let it go broke. They deserve it after believing the bunk that the politicians have been lading out since FDR started this scam.
SS will never go broke. If the Dems get back in charge, taxes will simply be raised to fund the current ponzi scheme.
Thanks much!
My SS payment wouldn't cover my food and utilites if I had to retire right now.
I understand.Once these younger people begin running things, they are not going to be so charitible to the old coots.
They will see their taxes skyrocketing and say "There oughta be a law........
And there will be.
Just as their grand parents decided that rasing a child was inconvenient, they will decide that taking of old coots who can't fend for themselves is inconvenient.
In the not so old days families took in the old people and took care of them, now that we have destroyed the family unit no one wants to take in a grandparent, it will cause divorce so they ship them off to the nursing home and everybody get's stuck with the bill. Isn't feminsim/liberalism/socialism, wonderful ?
I hate it too, but nothing gets done without playing politics. For the president to appear to be reaching out and saying all cards on the table makes him appear reasonable. WHere in fact, I think he knows darned well what he wants and how he's going to get it. And I don't think it will include a raise on the cap.
On the Rush Limbaugh show today, VP Cheney completely debunked this article!!

Bush was sent to us to be a great war time leader and he has led our foreign policy with character and determination.
That said, and the sheeples tendency to "trust" the dems are telling the truth when it comes to domestic policy. This tendency makes it hard for Bush to be taken seriously on domestic issues by the people. I can hardly believe this is true but by looking at latest polls on the SS issue I fear this is the case.
History shows us what happens to the great warriors, once the percieved threat lessons, the people will put them out to pasture.
That's the Dems' plan...When people can't take care of themselves, it fosters more government dependency.
Who the hell is Senator Pence??????????????????
