ABC Writes Out Fox (References to Fox News deleted from "Boston Legal")
LA Times ^ | Mar 11 05 | LA Times

Sunday's episode of [Boston Legal] series starring James Spader is about the censorship issues raised when a high school principal tries to block students' access to a cable news channel. In Kelley's original script, the network in question was News Corp.'s Fox News Channel.

But that script didn't pass muster with the standards department at Walt Disney Co.'s ABC, which ordered Kelley to remove multiple references to Fox News.

Query: Would they have done this if it had been the Communist News Network in the script or was this just a case not giving another competitor free publicity?

I really liked Boston Legal until Candace Bergen came on. Now every show is a political, anti-right rant. Too bad... I've had to x it off viewing list like West Wing (long ago), Curb Your Enthusiasm, etc., because I find thesse people so freakin vile.

Same here. My husband and I loved watching the first couple of episodes. The James Spader character and William Shatner are great. As soon as Candace Bergan joined the cast it went down hill. Every legal case is a liberal cause. I stopped watching.

Ditto re Candace Bergen. She's ruined the show for me. Then she showed up as a judge on Law and Order the other night. Click.

Actually, BL is co-produced by 20th Cent. Fox a "sister company" to FNC.

My sentiments exactly. I looked forward to Sunday nights and the best, wittiest, most clever legal show ever. The writing was superb, the acting sublime. Then along came Candace. I stopped watching forever after two episodes with her. She took all the fun out of it. And I think the original clever writers were fired or quit too. It's just not worth watching any more.

The process of dessication is never pleasant to watch.

Spader's character changed, too, imho -- less menacing and interesting.

I liked the episode with Denny Crane calling the judge a namby-panzy to get the judgement ruled his way. Shatners character is always interesting. The other guy who is hung up on himself is old and tired act in my opinion. I havent watched it in a while.

To be honest, this is probably a corporate competition decision. Also, FoxTV is a direct competitor to ABC and saying "Fox News" over and over again gives FoxTV some free pub. Saying "CNN" doesn't give free pub to "The WB" even though they're both the same entity.

One of my Friday evening shows, when I am here on Friday.

Not long ago Spade took second chair for Bergen and his true character was portrayed very well. I see no value in this program without Shatner or Spade and if they are not top dogs in the story I simply doze it.

Apropos to the FOX issue, one can only hope they liked Uncle Dan.

Ah, I see I'm not the only one that's written off BL since Bergen's arrival. If I want propaganda, I'll tune into CNN. Since I don't, darned if I'll watch BL.

I just sent abc an email with my opinion about Boston Legal and the Candace Bergen factor.

You could to! Send to netaudr@abc.com

Wonder if they really listen. Or care? But I figure we've got to tell them.

Denny Crane said something like "Thanks for Fox News" on one of the episodes.

Candace Bergen's character is great when she's zinging one-liners around the office. That part of her character I wish they would keep. But I agree, she seems to have been added just to be the lib mouthpiece for the show's creator.

Probably this means
that the script wasn't biased
enough to suit them . . .
