MADRID, Spain Muslim clerics in Spain issued what they called the world's first fatwa, or Islamic edict, against Usama bin Laden on Thursday, the first anniversary of the Madrid train bombings, calling him an apostate and urging others of their faith to denounce the Al Qaeda (search) leader.
The ruling was issued by the Islamic Commission of Spain, the main body representing the country's 1 million-member Muslim community. The commission represents 200 or so mostly Sunni mosques, or about 70 percent of all mosques in Spain.

The fatwa said that according to the Quran "the terrorist acts of Usama bin Laden and his organization Al Qaeda ... are totally banned and must be roundly condemned as part of Islam."
It added: "Inasmuch as Usama bin Laden and his organization defend terrorism as legal and try to base it on the Quran ... they are committing the crime of 'istihlal' continued

Until I know otherwise, I'm assuming the Zappo administration quietly threatened to cut off whatever taxpayer gravy this organization has been getting.
Well, I guess it is some progress... Why has it taken so long? Prolly because we have made it safe enough for these Imams to speak up.
You could argue that bin Ladin is like Dan Rather. Their friends aren't angry at them for what he did, but because they did it badly, and as a result hurt their causes.
If bin Ladin hadn't jumped the gun, Muslims could have gained a population majority in Europe, and taken it over without warning.
It's still not clear whether Europe has the will to resist a Muslim takeover, but at least they have been warned.
Does that mean I have to recall my Fatwa?
I DID issue mine first.
These guys are walking dead men.
I bet he his quaking in his sandals as he comtemplates this fatwa. I bet Spanish Muslims fill him with a holy fear!

Lip Service! Will take a wait-and-see attitude with this news.
I see your point and you are right they are not on our side.
Anyway any division of our enemies seems to have at least a positive side. Don't you think?
Specially if the new fraction rejects terrorism (if the are honest in that of course).
I'm not sure Fatwa's are lip service (although I'll never vouch for there adherence to logic). These guys probably did take a personal risk in doing this and for that they get props. I'm like you though - the proof is in what happens next. But I'll happily take anything remotely sane from this bunch.
I thought a FATWA was that boxy little Spanish two-door job that got 57 MPG.

I smell BS, oops, I mean, I smell more BS. Soon there'll be fatwas issued against these clerics.

I agree that division among our enemies can be a good thing. But, that does not necessarily mean that either of them being enemies stops the other from being our enemy.
Arabs are pretty well known to have the opinion "the enemy of my enemy is my friend. They may infight, but that wont save us anything.
Right now, I can not believe that either side rejects terrorism. Those who call for the fatwa are simply trying to protect their own behinds, IMO.
Too little, too late!
