The political science department at the University of Colorado should add Hectoring 101 to its schedule next semester, a class in which students will learn how to pester, protest, bully, intimidate and threaten an individual until the target of the abuse finally gets so fatigued that he or she can't take anymore.
Students in Hectoring 101 will not need to read classic literature about public service, social justice, human rights, civil liberties or due process. They won't need traits like fairness, restraint, civility or rationality.
Everything they will need to know can be learned by reviewing media coverage of the successful hectoring campaign against CU president Betsy Hoffman. They can do practicum studies at cattle ranches to pick up the basics of mob mentality. They'll learn that hectoring is most successful when you get high-ranking elected officials or media personalities to lead the charge, because they can initiate a stampede better than anyone. After that, instinct takes over, and the herd will rumble forward thoughtlessly for miles.
The typical steer in a stampede has no idea why he's running. Instinct simply compels him to keep up with the herd. He didn't see the threat, and now he doesn't have time to evaluate the situation.
If you asked the average Hoffman critic to write 200 words describing the job duties of a university president and a brief evaluation of how Hoffman has performed in those duties, he couldn't do it.
But that's why hectoring is such a popular sport. The entire herd can participate, and you don't need to know anything about the person you're attacking. You don't have to know her day-to-day duties; you don't have to know whether she accomplishes her goals; you don't have to know if her employees like working for her; you don't have to objectively assess her approach to conflict resolution; you don't have to know how she compares to the presidents of other universities.
All you need to know is that she doesn't handle controversy the way Donald "You're Fired!" Trump would handle it. Sadly, that's the only style Coloradans seem to respect. We watch "The Apprentice" and think that because Trump is a billionaire he must be a good leader. We appreciate his enthusiasm for firing people (he does it with such panache), and we start to expect our real-life leaders to act like him. But imagine how different the TV show would be if Trump didn't fire people but listened to their ideas, helped them overcome their challenges and trained them to learn from their mistakes.
The show would be boring because the herd doesn't have time for nuances and measured approaches. The herd needs simplicity in order to be effective. See a threat, run from it. Dislike someone's actions, fire them. If they don't disappear, stampede them until they simply can't take more abuse.
Kobe Bryant and his accuser's lives were picked apart for public consumption. John and Patsy Ramsey were never charged with a crime, but they had to leave the state to get away from people who attacked them relentlessly. Ward Churchill's critics will keep dragging him through the media until he quits or until they find a pretext to fire him. Politicians have to brace for mudslinging every campaign season.
Hoffman's critics have won a pyrrhic victory. Yes, she'll leave, and someone will replace her, but how many good candidates have been scared away from CU not by the scandals but by the abuse heaped on the president?
How many potential legislators, university employees, police chiefs, mayors and other public officials have we intimidated away from the professions because they don't want to put themselves or their families through this type of mindless abuse?
Over at [UC]Colorado State University-Pueblo.. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS reports
.."University-Pueblo are investigating a student's complaint that a professor called Mexicans "lazy and bitter" during a classroom tirade against illegal immigrants. Two students claimed tenured anthropology professor Dan Forsyth made the comment in a speech March 3, The Pueblo Chieftain reported in Saturday's editions.
According to the students, Forsyth allegedly said illegal immigrants and Mexicans have filled up U.S. prisons and "raped the system," the paper reported.
Forsyth denied the allegations, saying he only reminded students after class about a campus appearance by Rep. Tom Tancredo, R-Colo., an outspoken advocate for tighter immigration controls.
Victoria Watson, 20, notified the university's affirmative action office Friday, the newspaper reported. Her account was backed up by a student who asked not to be identified.
Boy oh boy, they can dish it out but they can't take it.
Those universities belong to us. Pester, bully, intimidate or threaten anyone who holds otherwise. Eliminating positions and departments like Churchil's will save us uncounted millions in tax dollars as well as improving the schools.
Ward Churchill is a bombastic phony, a poseur who invites ridicule with everything he says and does; a cigar-store Indian, faux academic, flagrant plagierist selling photoshopped copies of other people's art as original.
The only people who defend him are people just like him, the parasitic tenured socialists at the university and the mind-numbed students that treat him like a guru.
Ward Churchill's fifteen minutes of fame should be long over, but the corpse just won't lay down and act dead. He's the gift that keeps on giving to conservatives - the poster boy for all that is degenerate in American academia.
He will continue to be in the news as long as we continue to enjoy pointing at him with amusement. But that won't last forever.
I'm already getting tired of the Jane Fonda revolutionary. I suspect others are too. I'd say he's already served his useful purpose.
Can Gov. Owens come out from under his bed now ?
CU class scheduling note... hectoring 101 will not interfere with CU's core curriculum... Marxism 101, 202....
or socialism 1, 2,3, 4, 5.
Hoffman's critics have won a pyrrhic victory. Yes, she'll leave, and someone will replace her, but how many good candidates have been scared away from CU not by the scandals but by the abuse heaped on the president?
The "bad" candidate are the ones scared away...Hoffman is an Incompetent Liberal and Missmanaged the University.
CU is better off with a new President. someone with the GUTs to show Ward Churchill the DOOR.
