BATES TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — An Upper Peninsula man cooking in his kitchen was shot after one of his cats knocked his 9mm handgun onto the floor, discharging the weapon, Michigan State Police said.

Joseph Stanton, 29, of Bates Township in Iron County, was shot in his lower torso around 6 p.m. Tuesday, the state police post in Iron River reported. He was transported to Iron County Community Hospital.

Michelle Sand, a spokeswoman at the Iron River hospital, said Stanton was treated there before being transferred to Marquette General Hospital for further treatment. But Marcie Miller, a representative of the Marquette facility, said there was no record of the hospital receiving a patient by that name.

A telephone message seeking comment was left Wednesday at Stanton's home.

State police said he was cooking at his stove when the cat knocked the loaded gun off the kitchen counter behind him.

Some of them do a great job running down and killing mice and other rodents.

Cats are not useless. Did you never hear of rodents? And if you love them, they give much love in return. By the way, can any Freeper help me as to how to get a cat urine sample? We have a cat who is 16 years old and drinking alot of water and skimmed milk. We took him to the vet and they did a "Senior Feline" blood test and suspect some sort of kidney ailment. He's in indoor/outdoor cat, and uses the litter box. Any help will sincerely be appreciated. The vet told us he does not have feline leukemia and (this suprised) us - HIV.

When SHTF, do you want to be racking the slide?

My answer to this was to buy a S&W .38 Chiefs Special -- no hammer to catch on clothing, comes right out of the pants pocket quickly, hard to accidentally pull the trigger when drawing. and not much in the way of moving parts to jam. The down side is it only holds five rounds. I still thought, however, when surprised the ease of use outweighed other needs. I sometimes think a semiautomatic as a backup could further advance my advantage. But, then I would begin to think I was a bit paranoid.

Yeah, but why take a chance on having a cat in your house... a chance of the baby getting deathly sick from accidentally eating something out of the litter box, or a chance that your kids, (or yourself or spouse) getting asthma or bronchial decease from allergies or cat dander, risks of serious infection from cat scratches ... when a load of snake-shot through the .45 will kill the rats and other pesky rodents just as well?

I mean, for every reason you can think of to have a cat around, I can give you 2 reasons why it's just not worth the risk.

And now, when we hear about getting shot by your cat with your own gun, I mean, you'd have to be pretty stupid to have a cat in your house.

ESPECIALLY with children around.

"help me as to how to get a cat urine sample"

Hmmmm... That got me wondering.

I wonder if the cat that shot its owner might end up on probation....

Most of what I say is complete nonsense, so don't pay too much attention to me. To get a urine sample from your kitty (by the way, I'm being serious here):

Clean the litter box out completely and thoroughly. Fill it with uncooked lintels. Place the box and the cat in the bathroom (make sure you've removed the rugs) with a bowl of water. Wait. When the cat has used the litter box you can tilt it and collect the urine with an eyedropper.

He shouldn't have had a cat in the first place. They're really quite useless. That's why you never hear of a seeing-eye cat. Totally useless unless the blind guy does a lot of sleeping followed by a frisky scamper along a bookshelf.

I have a device that makes sure I never forget to chamber a round. It's called a "revolver."
