CU delays Churchill review (to craft buy-out offer)
Denver Post ^ | 3/8/05 | Dave Curtin

The University of Colorado's review of Ward Churchill's scholarship has been delayed, perhaps until Monday, partly to allow lawyers time to craft a buyout offer, according to a person close to the process.

The original March 3 deadline for the Churchill review has been pushed back twice now as a three-member committee of CU administrators wrestles with his writings, including an essay comparing some 9/11 victims to Nazi Adolf Eichmann.

Tuesday, Churchill's attorney, David Lane, said he is "not at liberty" to discuss any talks he might have had with the university on a buyout proposal. He said again, however, that Churchill has never received an official notice from the university of the review.

"All we know is what we read in the newspaper," Lane said.

Churchill is a tenured ethnic-studies professor at CU, and university officials say the U.S. Supreme Court has held that tenure is a "property interest" protected by the 14th Amendment and cannot be taken away without due process.

CU interim chancellor Phil DiStefano will determine if there is cause to fire Churchill based on an investigation of his scholarship by DiStefano, arts and sciences dean Todd Gleeson and law school dean David Getches.

Outgoing CU president Betsy Hoffman said last week that Churchill will lose his job only if there is proof of wrongdoing, not for constitutionally protected speech. Wrongdoing could include fabrication, plagiarism or other conduct "falling below minimum standards of professional integrity," according to the regents' bylaws.

Officially, the university said the delay is prompted by a desire to be thorough.

"The chancellor has said he will take the necessary time to conduct a fair and thorough review, even if it requires some additional time beyond his goal of the week of March 7," according to a university statement.

The only two tenured faculty members to be fired at CU - both dismissed in the last four years - sued the regents "even though we followed the process to the "nth degree," said CU Regent Peter Steinhauer.

Both of those firings "took years" to complete, Steinhauer said, because of the multilevel review, appeal process and lawsuits - one of which is ongoing.

1. He plagiarized artwork and articles. 2. He lied about his Indian heritage on his application. 3. Based on 2, his C-V is fraught with lies.

This is enough grounds to fire the loser. The State of Colorado should not capitulate and should not even be thinking of a buyout offer.

you are correct, it does make me wanna puke.

if you look at what people do to earn the taxes for these parasites to waste.

my father and brother are dairy farmers in colorado. they work from 4+ am till 9pm, 365. no vacations. some years my father admits to putting his savings into the business to meet the payroll expenses.

meanwhile, our elites keep on spending tax money.

the democrats need to forget their mantra of "be helpin' po' folks" and workin' people.

Absolutely. To which we can add: 4. His "scholarship" is fraudulent. 5. He has advocated violence on multiple occasions. 6. He has bragged about destroying government property. 7. He spit on an elderly woman in California and attacked a cameraman on CU campus.

I couldn't agree with you more. The rumor here in Colorado is that the buyout figure, if offered, will be somewhere between 3 and 5 million dollars.

Time to put some real pressure on this Eduweeniecrats.

NOT GOOD ENOUGH, CU. HOPE YOU ENJOY YOUR INDOLENT, SPINELESS, FOOL-HEARTY WALLOWS, IN YOUR *CHOSEN* IRRELEVANCE AS ANY SORT OF DESIRED, SEMI-DISTINGUISHED, SERIOUS INSTITUTION OF HIGHER LEARNING. IT'S NO LONGER JUST ABOUT POLITICS, IT'S LOUDLY (like I am here,) ENTERED THE REALM OF COMMON DECENCY. AND *NO* DESIRABLE, PROSPECTIVE, *TOLLERANT* STUDENT THINKS THAT *INDECENCY* AND PHONINESS IS HIP.

Can you say laughing stock? Can you *deal* with that label, CU? Your swamp will dry up. Kids' choices in college destinations spread like wildfire. One minute CU is "all that," with friends following one another there, and the next minute (year,) you're TOAST because one cool kid's parents don't want *their* cool child to go there and be a poor reflection on themselves. Being a laughing stock school loses "friends" in many ways, least of which successful alums with CASH, and successful parents of college bounds with CASH.

I say this with much knowledge of my particular (CASH abundant and AWESOME, HIGHLY DESIRED, VERY bright-studented High School,) area, and how *even this* mostly limosined-liberal community WILL, and already IS, responding to CU.

Should I state what I *really* feel?
