Cronkite Says Schieffer Was Better Choice as CBS Anchor
Washington Post ^ | 03/08/2005 | Lisa de Moraes

Posted on 03/09/2005 6:28:05 AM PST by BJClinton

Just 48 hours before Dan Rather steps down under a cloud as anchor of the CBS newscast he's helmed for 24 years, the guy he squeezed out said Rather should've been replaced years ago.

After nearly a quarter of a century, Walter Cronkite landed the final punch.

While Cronkite has always dismissed the speculation that rising star Rather speeded up his departure from the anchor chair, yesterday afternoon he sure did sound like someone trying to take a few whacks at a guy who had KO'd him.

Appearing on CNN, Cronkite, who anchored the CBS Evening News from 1962 to '81, said CBS News should have given the gig to Bob Schieffer years ago:

"He is, to my mind, the man who, quite frankly, although Dan did a fine job, I would like to have seen him there a long time ago," Cronkite told Wolf Blitzer.

"He would have given the others a real run for their money."

POW!!! THWOK!!

The Cronk is pissed that Gunga Dan messed up the prestige of his venue.

Uncle Walter was always more subtle as socialist pitch artists go.

From the guy who coined the phrase "..And that's the way it is", couldn't tell it like it is. C'mon Walt, tell us how you really feel.

Did they have extra long breaks in the show to give Cronkite time to change his Depends?

"He would have given the others a real run for their money."

A real run for their money in the Evening news soap box derby "Race to Irrelevance."

Schieffer is no different than Rather. Just a little smoother, more grandfatherly in his delivery. He's a card carrying DNCer.

I'm too young to remember Walt on TV but I discovered what an evil sh*t he is when, several years ago, I (and I assume, millions others) received a letter from "People for the American Way" quoting Walt on the dangers of letting Christians participate in politics.

Give a man long enough, and he will reveal his true colors.

What is it that Conkrite has become "news"?

The man is a doddering old fool who handed "we the people" enough B/S over these many years that the people think the smell is normal.

Anyone that idiot had respect for is long dead.

I particularly enjoy hearing Cronkite lecture on how the Democrats are the party with the common touch: the "Party of the People". He seems to best articulate these deep thoughts from his mansion after an afternoon of yachting.
Those of us who make our own beds, to use A. Coulter's test, agree to disagree with Wally.

Quite frankly after Cronkite's "endorsement", that would mean that Rather was the lesser of two evils? Egads!

It would be very hard for CBS to be watched less. Can ratings go negative?"

I don't think anyone is treating it as "news". Editorial only. But it's funny to watch the Radical Left™ self-destruct.

.

HILLARY cares what Anti-U.S. Internationalist CRONKITE thinks, and continues to do for her, BIG TIME as she zeros in on our Oval Office.

As long as we keep calling this man, who called for our Southern States to secede from our Union in 2000, "The Most Trusted Man in America"

...there is such a Danger.
