A rocket bound for places high above Earth to study the aurora borealis failed shortly after launch Sunday and crashed at 180 mph into the White Mountains National Recreation Area, north of Fairbanks.

Sounds to me like that's the malfunction.
They don't call it rocket-science for nothin.

It's a few million lying across the frozen tundra of Alaska. I bet the wild animals were up all night staring at the sky waiting for the next attack. The lights were out last night...dancing beautifully. What a shame the rocket didn't get to enjoy the show.
