An awful amount of new guns have indicators. The Beretta 92 has for ages. Springfield XD's, Walther P99's, Glocks, all new Rugers, and many other have them. It's getting hard to find a new design without them now.

Many guns are owned by untrained operators - including the police officer in the article.
That is why I train 100 to 200 NRA Certified Instructors each year. If I showed you the old and the new extractor you would be able to see the difference never to be confused.

NRA rules assume that all guns are loaded. Which is why you always point it in a safe direction. and always keep your finger off the trigger.

He was trained with Jeff's rules not the NRA rules.

NDs are always caused by either ignorance or carelessness.

Than you know the first rule: always assume the gun is loaded. An indicator will be used by lazy (careless) people to determine if the gun is loaded or not. That's it's purpose. It encourages dangerous shortcuts in safe handling. Indicator or not, there is only one safe way to determine if a gun is not loaded.

I will never retrofit my Glock(s) with such indicators.

I have updated all my Glocks including my carry G30.

I think a loaded chamber indicator is a good idea for a fighting gun. It has nothing to do with safety.

For protection, a quick glance will tell you if it is loaded or not. If not then you load it.

At night you can usually tell by feel.

What purpose does it serve?

I recommend everyone who handle Glocks that they keep them in a decocked status.
But you can check your carry gun for status by touching the side of the slide in the dark and know if it is chambered.

I will never buy a gun with such an indicator, and I will never retrofit my Glock(s) with such indicators. To me, all guns are always loaded, unless they're disassembled on the table in front of me.

I see that point but I'm thinking your carry gun always has one in the pipe and if not you would know it without the indicator. Tactically, I'll concede some purpose (very little. Safety wise, bad idea for mass consumption.

Reminds me of the scene in the Three Stooges movie Disorder In The Court, when Curly is holding the gun and says, "See, I told you it wasn't loaded" just before the gun goes off and grazes some bald guy's head.

We named our yearly Bowling Pin Shooting Competition, the "Ken Baker Memorial Pin Shoot," and the trophy was a gun case with a bullet hole it it... Ken, the Sr Range Safety Officer had a .22 Ruger Mk-II go off while he was putting it back into its case!

We never let him forget that... And he never let us forget how you can never take things like this for granted. (No, Ken didn't die... In fact, nobody was hit. His weapon was pointed safely downrange as he was putting it into the case).

As are mine. I own three of them. One is a first generation Glock 17. I've run close to 75,000 rounds through the 17 with no gun attributable malfunctions. The few times that it did cough was when poor quality cheap factory reloads were used.The finish and polymer shows a little wear and tear, but it just keeps on chuggin'.
