Loaded chamber indicators are one of the stupidist things I've ever heard of. To people used to them, an old gun without the "feature" that is loaded, will be mistaken for an unloaded one. If anything, there should be "unloaded chamber indicators" such that unequipped guns will automatically be presumed to be LOADED, which is the only safe assumption to make (unless you're pointing the gun at a criminal).

My guess is that after spreading this infection to a few guns, and getting the expected accidents ("But I thought it was unloaded because it didn't have the indicator sticking out!"), there will then be calls to ban the old technology. "Sorry, Mr. and Mrs. America, turn them all in, unless they have the indicator."

"I'm the only one in the room professional enough to carry a gun..."

Yeah, that struck a chord. That, and references to Fiddy-cent and Tupac, both who've been 'ventilated' by such weapons. Could be that when the gangsta rappers were shot, someone was merely clearing their weapon.

Not wanting to pollute the racial divide, but had that failed demonstration been the result of a caucasion's attempt at weapon handling superiorty, there'd be lawsuits aplenty.

Ain't diversity grand?

Anyone that would rely on a loaded or unloaded indicator is an idiot

Jeff Cooper's /Gunsite Rules of Gun Safety

I: ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED - ALWAYS

II: NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT WILLING TO DESTROY

III: KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET

IV: BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET

How many FReepers with M1911A1 experience in the military have seen the classic? Walk up to the clearing barrel, pull the slide back and inspect the "empty" chamber, let the slide go forward, remove the magazine, sort of carelessly point the business end at the clearing barrel and BANG? I have seen it more than once. The look of surprise is usually worth 1,000 words.

Please check my understanding: Seems to me the sequence was wrong. He/we should drop the magazine FIRST, then pull the slide back and check the chamber? The way it's described, the fact that the chamber was empty before dropping the magazine is irrelevant. If the magazine is still in place, and the slide is closed, it will chamber a round if the magazine has one?

There is no way they can be confused by a trained operator.
You are clearly not trained. I could train you in three minutes.

According to an article on this thread, the agent was returned to duty after recovering from his wounds.

Remember that all LEOs including these dufii were trained with Jeff's rules.

The NRA updated our rules fifteen years ago and "NDs" dropped.

NRA Safe gun handling rules
Rule 1 Always keep the gun pointed in a safe direction.
Rule 2 Always keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot.
Rule 3 Always keep your gun unloaded until ready to use.

These NRA rules just work better than Jeff's which have not been updated since WWII

I agree. Then why have a loaded chamber indicator?

"Dropping the magazine and cycling the mechanism several times to ensure a clear chamber would have been the minimum a responsible gun owner or LEO would do."

It always pays to VISUALLY inspect the chamber while clearing any weapon.

Why am I not surprised?

As one person said of the Department of the Inferior "Is there nothing that is 'unacceptable to the Service'?"

Like most AgencyPersons, once their snout is in the agency trough, it is nearly impossible to fire one of those things.

Many guns are owned by untrained operators - including the police officer in the article. Like it or not, there will be many people who will become accostomed to the indicator, and who then will mistake an un-indicatored gun for an unloaded gun. That will lead to mistakes, in my opinion, and eventually it will lead to calls for more gun control laws. Put me down as solidly against. I will never buy a gun with such an indicator, and I will never retrofit my Glock(s) with such indicators. To me, all guns are always loaded, unless they're disassembled on the table in front of me.
