GOP senator Graham rankles some over comments on Lincoln

Senator Lindsey Graham has ignited a new furor in Washington over comments he made over the weekend referring to his state’s difficulty in “getting over” President Abraham Lincoln, with apparent reference to Lincoln’s role in the civil war and the freeing of American slaves, RAW STORY has learned.
“We don’t do Lincoln Day Dinners in South Carolina,” Senator Graham told a Lincoln Day gathering in Tennessee Saturday. “It’s nothing personal, but it takes awhile to get over things.”
According to a Knoxville News Sentinel article published Sunday, Graham entertained an amicable crowd and joked about his predecessor in the Senate, former Sen. Strom Thurmond.
“In theory, I have 50 more years left in the Senate,” Graham remarked.
The article, titled “GOP senator has unifying message,” was picked up upon by the progressive Washington blog DC Inside Scoop.
The Democratic National Committee said Sen. Graham’s remarks were inappropriate and that they echoed comments made by former Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott (R-MS), which resulted in Lott’s removal as Senate leader.
“Joke or not, this is exactly the type of comment that Trent Lott made when he was deposed as leader,” said DNC spokesman Jano Cabrera. “It has no place in public discourse.”
“He should apologize,” Cabrera added.
Sen. Graham’s office was closed and could not be reached for comment Monday evening.
Several Hill offices declined immediate comment, saying they wanted to review Graham’s remarks in full, and that on such a delicate matter, the members in question would have to approve any responses.
Sen. Lott told a 2002 birthday celebration in honor of Sen. Strom Thurmond that he was proud his state supported Thurmond’s pro-segregation 1948 campaign.
“We’re proud of it,” Lott said. “And if the rest of the country had followed our lead, we wouldn’t have had all these problems over all these years either,” Lott said.
The resulting outcry cost Lott his job as Majority Leader. Lott later apologized, saying racism and segregation were “immoral.”
Hey sh*thead, Ronald Reagan was born and raised in Illinois, the Land of Lincoln. He was governor of a state that fought with Lincoln for the preservation of the Union. He sure wasn't southern.
And for that matter he is dead. Name a NORTHERN politician that is alive, republican, and conservative.
Sure...just as soon as you name a southern one.

Worthless statistic. Clinton and Kerry also got more votes in your state than in mine.

Laughable. Geography has nothing to do with human nature, and concerning growth of government by all parties, that is the allure of power. It's comical that in light of the realities facing us, you lash out at those of us who long for more widely distributed government (or at least a lever to pry on it with), then turn and insist that it's OK to collect authority in DC, so long as Kansas gets to pick the president.
Maybe comical isn't the right word... pitiful?
Take a look over at the other thread, for instance. FTD is still crapping in a bowl, eating, repeating, and thinking quite highly of himself for doing so. Capitan has borrowed his own misgivings and lies from previous threads and continues to hose them onto the board wildly in hopes of shotgunning a hit where none could be found before, and of course, we still have Non to snipe from his little 'holier-than-thou' tower from time to time.
What are the democrats really doing to Graham... racial implication? No, only that he made a statement, probably as a joke, that might upset the idolators. My only surprise is that the Democrats are leading the charge, and Republican Lincolnites haven't also started stringing the rope to hang him with (yet).
The book has a lot of interesting stuff in it, but DiLorenzo is a biased author, to be fair.
No more ridiculous than those of you who would decry what you see as the collection of power and the trampling of states rights by Lincoln and then support it in far larger measures by Bush.
Thus my point: my state is bigger than yours.

Notice the common theme here. Everything is relative to Lincoln, and that which is preferred to Lincoln gets immediately torn down to Lincoln's level so that Lincoln may be preserved without comparable fault.
And fortunately they're so overshadowed by the number of Republicans that not one of them has any power in the state government. Last I checked didn't you have a Democrat governor or something? Or was it Lt. Governor? Perhaps both?
The latter being an assumption (a poor assumption) on your part. In case you haven't noticed, many of "those of you" aren't exactly bushbots.

Yes, the Northeastern "moderate" Republicans are model proponents of "smaller less intrusive government" and "support for states rights," aren't they? (sarcasm off). As for "fiscal responsibility", the "moderates" are great at raising taxes to pay for ever increasing government programs, but not so terrific at cutting programs or reducing taxes.
Graham's stock would go down irretrievably in my estimation if he didn't express problems with King Lincoln.
The president, senate majority leader, senate majority whip, house majority leader and house majority whip are all southerners. Are you honestly suggesting that they are really small government, balanced budget conservatives but are powerless in the face of the moderate Republicans?
What for? Heck, that's reminiscent of our former representation. Sen Helms would say what he meant and if you didn't like it too bad. Wish we had conservative representation these days in this state. Unfortunately all we've got is Burr and Dole.
Senator, do not apologize. You are right. We don't have them because many of us still remember. If you show any weakness the liberal and 'conservative' elite will never relent until they have their full satisfaction. We saw it with the flag in SC and have seen it in many other places since. There are some who might say that there is no Republican party today. Just a mockery of the word.
