Opinion: Apple -- Here to Stay

Nearly a decade ago, just a few months after Microsoft shipped Windows 95, I asked Bill Gates if it was a conscious decision in the development of that product to give Windows more of a Mac look and feel. Of course I knew he'd say it wasn't, but I couldn't resist asking. "There was no goal even to compete with Macintosh," Gates proclaimed. "We don't even think of Macintosh as a competitor."

That was a crock, so I pressed the issue a little. I asked him how he accounted for the widespread perception that Windows 95 looked a lot like Mac 88, and whether the similarity was just a coincidence. I didn't expect a sobbing confession of mimicry, but I thought it would be cool to see how he'd respond. Surprisingly enough, Gates shifted gears and became more forthcoming.

I said TAKE IT TO A MECHANIC AFTER BUYING... not before. It would be alright if the computer dealer did what you say the car dealer does... but the don't. THEY should install all of the free anti-malware stuff and have it running for the new owner... just as the new car dealer preps the car for the new owner.

It's not "running" in the classic sense. It's being emulated. So your performance and mileage may vary.

It's funny... Bush2000 making statements about something he has never done...

Actually, the experience is that most "classic" software runs BETTER in the emulation mode than it did on a native OS9- system.

So when I'm online and the dang rainbow swirley shows up, is Mr. Mac trying to tell me something?

What are you doing when the "rainbow swirly" shows up? It generally means the Mac is busy doing something in that program. It has no effect on other apps that are running.

and it does not run on a simple AAA battery like many of its competitors.

I know why. An iPod Shuffle is thinner than a AAA battery, so it's kind of hard to cram one in there.

Every dealer has a quality checklist that they go through before handing you the keys.

And here's where you're going to blame the OEMs again for not making up for Microsoft's mistakes.

Have you bought a car recently? Apparently not. There's a long list of quality checks that the dealer makes AFTER YOU BUY THE CAR!

You're right. I had the displeasure of watching *somebody else* waste their time doing just that.

If one needed to pay for a battery of checks and upgrades after taking delivery of a new car, there would be hell to pay.

When Windows 95 came out, MS didn't have 95% of the market; Apple was the number three computer seller in the nation after IBM and Compaq.

It's a bit different now. Dell (#1) and HP (#2) have over half the market between them. Then there's IBM, Gateway/eMachines, and Apple coming in at #5. So, the #5 PC seller in the country doesn't even sell PCs -- not bad for a "niche" computer.

I think that's another example of Apple sacrificing usability for cool factor.

Haven't we explained this to you before? Classic is OS 9 running inside of OS X -- not emulated, just running. If you think back a few years, it's almost like how you could run 16-bit apps in Windows 95, they're not emulated, but run in their own separate space with a 16-bit layer.

As far as performance goes, the OS 9 environment gets to take advantage of the superior OS X memory management (it's modified to do so when used in Classic), so applications run faster in Classic than in a machine booted straight into OS 9, which would be using only its own crappy memory management.

I've gone over this before with somebody else. It's just an engineering decision. They do regular batteries, but then you get the possibility of the door hinges or latches breaking, dirt and moisture getting inside, a larger space for the battery and contacts, and corrosion on the contacts. It's better to seal it inside and avoid all those problems, plus you get to make it a lot smaller.

The first device I had that did this was a Palm V, and I loved the decision. Made for a smaller, sturdier device.

So I buy a car, take it home, then some friends (not the dealer) tell me I need to take it back to the dealer for some modifications so that the car doesn't die? It's as if there's a constant recall on 95% of the cars sold in the US, where the problems aren't fixed at the dealer before handing over the car.

Yes, I bought a Chrysler 300 last month. I finished the deal with the sales manager and drove it off the lot. I did not have to take it back, I did not have to wait, and I did not have to worry about adding the oil stored in the trunk.

The dealer had done all the prep work before I walked into the showroom.

I don't know where you buy your cars, Bush, but I would find another dealer.

Strange... I have over 300 "classic" applications on my G5 running OSX and have not found even one that had a problem running in the "classic mode". You are making things up again, Bush.

Wrong. Never did I use the word "is". Your knowledge of logic is as lacking as your knowledge of computer technology.

You misinterpreted what LVD is saying. He's saying that, given the competition, the iPod is overpriced. That is factually accurate

Thank you. I think it is futile to try and reason with Swordmaker. It is nearly impossible to reason with fanatics.

WHY WOULD YOU DO SUCH A STUPID THING? Apple will replace your battery for no charge (including shipping, both ways) if your battery dies while the warranty is still in effect.

Convenience. If I want to use an iPod but discover that the battery is toast, it would be nice to go down to my local electronics store and buy a new one and slap it on -- just like I can with most other popular appliances (cell phones, cameras, etc). Nearly every other competing MP3 player provides the ability to replace the battery without mailing the damned thing back to the manufacturer. The fact that you can't admit that Apple made a poor design choice here is very telling. It says that, in your mind, Apple can do no wrong. That every design choice they make is the right one -- no matter how inane -- and that you'll defend them with your last breath. In other words, you're a religious zealot. Impervious to reason.
