Walt Disney is to promote its $100 million adaptation of C S Lewis's The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe as a "Passion of the Christ for kids" in an attempt to secure worldwide Christian support for the film.
Disney executives have organised private meetings with several church groups in America to emphasise the themes of Christian redemption and sacrifice contained in the film, which will open in December with an all-star cast.
They have also hired a public relations company to market the film directly to Christian groups to ensure that the powerful evangelical movement, which is particularly strong in America, is happy with the content.
The film, which stars the British actors Tilda Swinton, who will play the White Witch, and Brian Cox, who will provide the voice of Aslan the lion, will be the first in a series of Disney blockbusters inspired by the seven books in the Narnia series, whose author was known for his strong Christian beliefs.

A Michael Jackson production.
>>"Spirited Away" is warmly recommended for family viewing. I just saw "Porco Rosso" and that was unspoiled by Disney tampering, too. I have just ordered that, "Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind," and "The Cat Came Back" for my DVD library, all just released, sponsored by Disney but directed by Miyazaki. I have all his earlier movies on DVD. They're all terrific.<<
Good choices!!! I love Studio Ghibli films. We own all of them in original Japanese and are slowly collecting them in English. I want my girls to watch with subtitles because it forces them to read. They Love "Castle in the Sky" and I refuse to get in in English.
Have you seen "Grave of the Fireflies?" It has an anti war message but is extremely well done. One cries for hours at this film.
And if you have kiddies, make sure you get "My Neighbor Totoro." The Soot Sprites from "Spirited Away" make their debut!
My kids love, "Panda Go Panda" but basically it's eye candy.
I'm dying to see "Howl's Moving Castle." It's openning here in the US in June. I think it's a Disney release as well.
(have you seen the English Dub of "Kiki's Delivery Service"?
That was the first we saw. Phil Hartman as the cat Jiji, makes the film!)
****Remind me again why this is suppoesed to be a problem? ***
Ummm... older children get into characters - they read up on them and have posters of them on their walls. A leading lady lesbian white witch = influence and normalization of the idea of homosexuality in a "Christian" movie.
***If you're looking for Christians to star in this you're going to be disappointed. ****
And choosing a lesbian to lead a movie targeting Evangelicals shows just how far Disney has their foot up their hind side.
***I'm not real thrilled with her "lifestyle"***
Hey, it's just about sex right!
***but it won't be the deciding factor weather I go or not.***
You are not in the primary target market.
Think Disney will get the same reception from churches that Mel Gibson did? I doubt it.
***Ole Walt would turn over in his grave if he saw what his beloved Disney has turned into.***
He truly would. I saw an interview with him about his plans for EPCOT and he was talking all about using it to show the world the greatness of American Free Enterprise. (His vision of EPCOT was quite a bit grander that what it actually became).
He must have used that phrase, "American Free Enterprise" 10 times.
I never heard him say "diversity" once.
A 'passionate' bump for C. S. Lewis!
Catholic Ping - Come home for Easter and experience Gods merciful love. Please freepmail me if you want on/off this list
Bump.
the only thing Disney sees if the green of dollars.
This is no different than democrats trying to change their words but not their objectives.
How the heck did disney end up with this project?
Ever since Walt died, they've displayed a remarkable talent to turn finery into filth...
Gag...heave...barf...
Isn't this being co-produced by Walden Media - the same group that brought us "Because of Winn-Dixie"? I'm still holding out hope that this will be a good series.
I can't wait to see "Howl's Moving Castle" either. I'm slightly hopeful it'll be the movie to convince my mother that anime can be a-ok. But I'm torn about seeing it dubbed in the theater versus waiting for the subtitled rental.
hmmm an EVIL lesbian. That will go over well with the homo clique at disney.
There is a pillow talk joke inthere somewhere....
Exactly. You evil mean-spirited Christians can't criticize our pro-gay policies but we're happy to take your money . . . we'll even pretend our movies are pro-Christian if you'll pay us. They'd have done better just by stretching out several movies from the Marnia Chronicles instead of just one with the first making people want to see the second etc. I guess they didn't get the hint from the LOTR triolgy. Loving parents should just read the books to their children and try to develop their imaginations; skip Disney.
Did you bother to read the article?
Where did you read she was a lesbian? Just wondering because her IMDB biography (not always the most accurate info) lists her as having a husband.
You have to go see it in theaters! Need to convince Dinsey, etc., that we'll pay for this stuff so we get more!
Steamboy also debuts in theaters in 3 weeks--can't wait!
That is a valid point. Money talks and BS walks.
