"Spy Files" Revisited"
by: Robert Hardaway (University of Denver Law Professor)
Created: 4/2/2005 6:00 PM MST - Updated: 4/3/2005 11:33 AM MST

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "In April 2003, in what became known as the Denver Spy Files" case, the ACLU settled a lawsuit brought against the city of Denver in which it had alleged that Denver undercover police had been monitoring and recording the peaceful protest activities of Denver-area residents and keeping files on the expressive activities of law-abiding advocacy organizations. According to that settlement, Denver agreed to purge all of its existing criminal intelligences files, and to not engage in any undercover operations unless a supervising lieutenant first reviewed and approved the request of such an undercover operation.

Since the settlement of that suit, however, the ACLU has continued to claim that the FBI continues to extend its surveillance to local law-abiding advocacy groups such as the American Friends Service Committee."

CARNAGE AT TAMIL SERVICE IN GERMAN CHURCH

By Michael Ireland
Chief Correspondent, ASSIST News Service

GERMANY (ANS) -- A man wielding a sword has killed one person and injured at least three more at a church in Germany, police say, according to a news article posted on the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) website.

Details are still emerging, and the motive for the attack that took place in the middle of a service in the Protestant church is as yet unclear.

Officers said they found "grisly" scenes after the afternoon attack in the southern city of Stuttgart. One woman is reported to be in a serious condition following the assault.

"Severed limbs were lying all round the church," a police spokeswoman said, adding that one man was arrested.

The BBC reports that Police spokesman Hermann Karpf said that the attack came as members of the local Tamil community were gathered inside the church.

"The suspected perpetrator was arrested. He is believed to be a Tamil, and the service was also a Tamil service," Mr Karpf was quoted as saying.

Police used pepper spray to overpower the man, according to Germany's Spiegel.

About 40 people are believed to have been in the church, most of them thought to be members of the Tamil community who originally come from southern India and Sri Lanka.

The BBC said counseling has been offered to those who witnessed the attack.

Thanks for the links MamaD. The deaths of the missionaries in Brazil is so sad. I hope they find out who and why. My cousin in Costa Rica is still waiting for me to come visit. I'm afraid she is going to be waiting for a while longer before I am willing to go anywhere south of the border.
