Chancellor Candidate

Poll Confirms Wulff's chances against Schröder

Gerhard Schröder must come to grips with a new opponent. According to a poll, Lower Saxony's Governor Christian Wulff would have considerable chances in a head to head election for the Federal Chancellor against the incumbent.

Christian Wulff: Challenger in the wings
Bielefeld -- In a survey by the polling institute TNS Emnid for the news agency ddp 39 per cent of the people asked spoke for the 45-year-old CDU man Wulff. Chancellor Schröder is only five percentage points in front. In a direct election 44 per cent would decide for him instead of Wulff.

TNS Emnid had representatively questioned 501 citizens on March 3rd. The margin of error of the survey is plus/minus 4.5 percentage points. As the institute further investigated, Wulff would have even bigger chances in the West German states against Schröder. The gap was merely three percentage points (41 to 44 per cent) there. Chancellor Schröder was clearly ahead with 48 to 28 per cent in the East German states.

In the analysis of TNS Emnid, Wulff is even in front of Schröder in specific groups. This applies to those over 50 and with women. With voters with a lower education level there is a stalemate between Schröder and Wulff.

The Union parties want to decide officially in the next couple of months who will challenge incumbent Gerhard Schröder as a candidate for the Chancellorship in the parliamentary elections in fall 2006. The best chances were given to CDU leader Angela Merkel. Named as other possible candidates beside CSU leader Edmund Stoiber, however, were Wulff, as well as his counterparts from Hesse and from the Saarland, Roland Koch and Peter Müller (both CDU).

Wulff is regarded as a more likely candidate for the parliamentary elections 2010, though. From his closest adviser circles was heard recently: "He can wait".

Chancellor Schröder was clearly ahead with 48 to 28 per cent in the East German states.

I find this incomprehensible.

Michael:

Last week I was hoping the the Union would unify and rally behind Merkel. Now this.

Is this a media attempt to create uncertainty in the Union Chancellor question, or is Wullf a viable candidate?

Thanks,

longjack

This guy is boring to no end. I'd rather have Merkel. An even better chancellor would be Schäuble http://www.wolfgang-schaeuble.de

With Köhler as president, Schäuble chancellor, Westerwelle foreign minister we'd be unbeatable.

Thanks for the ping!

It's like the polls here in the US,if you remember at one point sKerry was ahead, but only in the Blue States.

You can't tell by just one poll who will be president anyway,it's all the voters that will decide and not the few that were polled.

That is just my humble opinion!

I'm definitely a Schäuble fan.

That would be wishful thinking, though, he makes too much sense for Otto Normalverbraucher to handle, unfortunately

The Union has to get their act together and get solidly behind one candidate. They've got the Red-Greens on the run again and cannot afford to let them off the hook as they did a year ago.

I find this incomprehensible.

If East and West Germany were still separate, Schröder would not have even become Chancellor. Unfortunately former Communist politicians were able to integrate into the SPD without getting any scrutiny about their backgrounds. They are the ones promoting the virulent anti-American policies in Germany.

Good explanation, thanks.

One has to wonder, with some of the unemployment figures in the former Eastern states around 20% from what I've heard, what these guys are telling their constituents? That there was no unemployment in East Germany?

It brings to mind the theories of the Soviet Union's collapse as a tactic to disarm and infiltrate the west.

Only shortly before the election the SPD used anti-American propaganda to gain votes. Right after the election they stopped it and the relations are normal again now. Here on the board pro-Europeanism is often equated with anti-Americanism, which it isn't.

For our conservatives number 1 priority is the European integration, too. If they have to decide between Europe (=our own wellbeing) and the U.S. it'll always be Europe. That's no anti-Americanism for me.

It'll never be like in the eighties again.

Sometimes I wonder if Ronnie pulling down the wall actually opened up a flood of socialism into West Germany. While the other soviet block countries had to stand on their own two feet and rebuild their societies, the East Germans may have had it too easy. They could just lay back and be supported by the West Germans.

I was lucky enough to do some work with the West German Navy back in the 80's, and I can't believe the great people I met believe the craziness coming out of their government. Have they changed or are they just drowned out by the flood?

I´m pretty sure that we can win in NRW, so there´s noone who can stop Merkel. Wulff is indeed an option for 2010, maybe even 2014 (in case of a Merkel win 2006 she will candidate in 2010, too). He is a great guy, but it would be too late for him to candidate. But then, it´s never too late - and never say never.

Schroeder's anti-American, anti-Bush card should be coming out anytime now.

Remember, the east Germans were communists (many still are) so in that light it makes perfect sense.

No. He cannot afford to do it again, and he has more serious problems than foreign policy.
